Looking to pull the trigger this weekend on an I7 27inch Imac. How many have a 1TB vs 2Tb hard drive

Are they all Hitachi drives?

Hi all, is the Hitachi drive always used when opting for a 2TB drive? I ask because I received a new i7 27 imac yesterday through a reseller (Hardsoft Computers) who had ordered in the machine and then upgraded it themselves.

Firstly I have an issue with the HD fan increasing in speed (its currently running at 3646rpm and climbing!) and I noticed when checking what drive they had installed its a Seagate ST32000542AS which in my book is inferior to the Hitachi drive as it runs at 5900rpm compared to 7200rpm on the Hitachi.

Typically they are closed today and now not open till Tuesday due to a bank holiday over here in the UK, but Apple have been very helpful and will help me out of Hardsoft get difficult. What model are the Hitachi drives?

Cheers

Tom

P.S. The HD fan is now at 4037rpm!

AFAIK, all 2TB drives that Apple use are Hitachi because that is the cheapest 7200rpm 2TB drive. If the reseller upgraded it on their own, then it can be any 2TB drive but you paid for 7200rpm so I would demand one

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but just how difficult is it to put the drive in yourself? Removing the glass looks terrifying, but I'd rather throw in a WD Caviar Black and save a ton of money.

I think removing the glass is the easy part...

Neat! I'm not scared of the other stuff, just bending and/or breaking 27 inches of slightly flexible glass attached with neodymium magnets. :D

/complete misunderstanding of whatever you said ;)

I will not use a HD larger than 1TB. The failure rate on 1.5's and 2's is much greater than with the 1TB models. IMO.

...FW800 is your friend... I have as little as possible on my internal iMac HDD so if any part of the iMac craps out all I have to do is unplug the FW drive and ship my iMac in without having to worry about personal data on the HDD while in :apple:'s care...

I have a silent 1TB

I've never really had a problem with storage in the past. And considering I'm used to my old laptops (40gb and 180gb) and desktop (120gb)...1TB is pretty fine by me. I also have a 500gb external I've hardly used (~80gb of backups)
