I am looking to get a MBP but wonder is it worth saving £70 by getting 2x512mb ram instead of 1x1gb ram?

if you are planning to add more later, go with the single 1gb...

but if you leave it a 1 gb total, 2x512 will be faster

i plan to upgrade later but not for about a year...

im thinking 2x512mb would be faster and save £70

£70 + the sale of 2x512mb would go toward half the price of 2x1gb in a years time?

Someone tested (please tell me that I'm not hallucinating) the 2x512MB vs 1x1GB and it performed almost the same. The 2x512MB was marginally faster, but nothing significant. I'd just go with the 1x1GB.

but is the 1gb worth £70 ($140) more

What are the benifits of going for 1x1gb?

go with 1x1GB. you probably won't notice a difference and when you upgrade in a year you won't have to worry about selling the other sticks.

is it $140 more or $140 total? if it's 140 more, i change my answer to 2x512. still, $140 for a 1GB stick seems high. i got 2x1GB for $200.

in UK the 2.16Ghz, 15.4" MBP with 1x1gb Ram = £1699 ($3,179.84)
in UK the 2.16Ghz, 15.4" MBP with 2x512mb Ram = £1629 ($3,048.83)

Saving of £70 ($131)

Hey Pianoman,

Where u get the 2x1gb for 200? I guessing US dollars, i live in Australia and want to upgrade RAM so bad, i not sure if 2x 512 or 2x 1gb. If i get one 1gb stick and then have a empty slot, is that bad? i have a macbook by the way. Or should i get 1gb and keep the other 256 in?

Thanks guys.

The reason 2 x 512 is faster than 1 x 1024 is that you have the same amount of memory bits available, but twice as many pins to access them.

At Streetwise, 1GB MacBook RAM is $175. I have this RAM in my MacBook and haven't had a problem with it.

Having just one RAM stick in isn't bad, but if you have more on hand, it will give you a performace boost. In my MacBook, i have 1GB + 256MB, and it runs fine. I plan on buying another gig stick soon.

Just get 1x1 gb, it wont be noticeably slower than 2x512 anyway, and as said you don't have to be bothered with selling those 512 sticks in a years time, when they probably will be next to worthless anyway.
Btw, If you need to send it in for repair, you must send it in with your apple RAM, so they know it's not some 3rd party memory that's causing what ever trouble you might have.

My suggestion: you won't notice the difference in speed with mismatched sticks but you will notice the difference more RAM can make. You appear to be able to afford the 1x1Gb option but why not order the 2x512, sell 1x512 and buy 1x1Gb for £70. Whatever you sell the 512 for is just a bonus and you end up with 1.5Gb of RAM :D

I looked around and price wise, i think i just going to get 1gb, i had 2x512 in last model of the ibook and it flew, so im thinking just get 1gb and slot 2 to have 256mb. Thanks for the tip on the apple ram wen getting repaired, i was going to sell it. Aprreciate that. Atm, im not really happy with the macbook, its so slow with only 512 in it, at most times i have 6mb of Ram free according to stat pro.

1 x 1gb..no doubt

JUST in case you want to upgrade later..this option does NOT limit your capabilities :D
