Hi all,

Ive downloaded the USB patchstick creator for the mac, I loaded the the latest .dmg file: 2Z694-6004-003.dmg and carried out the process. Ive already updated my ATV to firmware 3.0.1 before hand. I inserted the USB patchstick and let it do its thing. Rebooted the ATV, it loads up with all the usual options, plus the newly installed ones from the patchstick, only I cant get into them? Any reason why this is. Should I have done the patch on version 2.4, then updated the software to 3.0.1?

Im doing this so that I can access my ext hard drive, not interested in boxee etc...

Thank you
Carl.

I've got this too. The options are there under Software Menu (3rd Party Plug-ins, Manage Built-in, Scripts, Restart, Settings) but I am unable to select them. I click the play/pause button and I hear the song you get when you hit an invalid button but nothing opens.

I am a newbee as well. I am pretty good at following instructions from other threads, but many of them assume you are more literate. Do you know how to open an SSH connection. Its basically a way to enter command lines and have the apple TV execute them. It is in Applications>>Utilities>>Terminal connection. After you get to that window you can install NitoTV which I have read is the way to go to get the USB unlocked. Once you get an SSH connection you can literally follow the directions at this link. Keep in mind some of these directions are for the old OS 2.4 for the ATV. Most of it works for 3.0.1 except as you will read below.

Now, being this all said, NitoTV is now a Take 3 version not a Take 2 so you have to make the adjustments in the command line. I have not been successful yet getting it to work. I have gotten as far as getting all of this stuff to show up on the AppleTV and have been able to install most of the stuff from the NitoTV installer. The one that unlocks the USB is supposed to be a program called smartinstaller. I can not for the life of me get it to run correctly. I get an error every single time about a specific file that it can't open. Here it is. I think the 10.4.9 might not be compatible with 3.0.1. I read that somewhere trying to figure this out.

MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.9Intel.dmg

I have posted for help, and no one ever responds on my threads. I have looked up and down the internet for a way to get this to work. I just did a factory reset today and updated to 3.0.1 again. I am going to start over and see if I can get it to work.

I post this to just stimulate research on the internet for you. I know it is not an answer, but maybe in my struggle you can find success, then help me get it going.

Frustrated. I wish someone would just post a simple fix!!!!!

Here's a free tool that works !
It lets you create your patchstick for firmware 3.0.1 and patch without any manual steps.
Once you installed the base version, you can either do the rest manually or use the commercial solution.

Thanks Tom. Gonna try that now. I almost went through the old process again just to see if it was me. I'll let you know.

Tom, quick question. Before I use this Patchstick, I already patchsticked last night after I did a factory reset and upgraded to 3.0.1 with the old atv-USB creator. Do I need to do another factory reset before I use this patchstick that you pointed me too.

And, I didn't realize it was free. I thought it was one of those things u could use then have to pay for after a certain time. What other stuff will I need to work around? Sorry for sounding like such a newbie but I am for this stuff. I have gotten comfortable with ssh commands, but need to know what to actually put in.

So will this base version unlock the USB?

Why does this always happen to me?

Patchstick

Got it to work on another Mac in the house. Now I need to learn what this thing can do. I take it form what you posted earlier I still have to do other work arounds to get the USB unlocked etc... By the way, how do you set up your media in the house? What's the best way. For now I am converting all my DVD's to MP4 files and dumping them onto my Time Capsule. Can I stream them now to appleTV, or will that be too slow? Or do I just buy a 1TB drive and hook it to the apple TV and do it that way? Trying to learn.

I really appreciate your advice!

I personally have an external HD connected to my ATV. Since 2 days, I installed the broadcom HD decoder which allows you to play HD movies via XBMC
