I have tried to download the 3.0 firmware for the 3gs from this web site http://www.poorlad.com/iCommunity/ and have only gotten a zip file ... I'm on a vista 64b bit machine ... can someone walk me through getting the .ipsw file to my pc?

when I double click it slowly, there is no .zip ... the end of the name is restore ... if anyone has this file as a .ipsw I'd appreciate it if they just emailed it to me at fuzzywuzhe at aol.com
Boy, you are right about not being computer savvy......
You need to turn on setting that shows file extensions. It's buried in Folder options in Windoze.
Take my advice, with your level of understanding, stay away from JB, as your next post will have the word HELP in it.

Besides, you likely won't have the understanding to apply any modifications to the phone once you JB it.

Well your right about one thing ... I shouldn't be trying to jb in the middle of the night after a horrible week including 2 computers going down and having to purchase a new one to maintain my business ... also the death of a friend in a motorcycle accident ... anyway ... in all the commotion I didn't realize the new vista machine had that setting off ... so for that I thank you ... the JB went fine and you won't see a message with the word help in it ... I dl'd the file on an ancient (windows 98) laptop and was able to change the file extention before reading your post ... I have since checked and yes the setting was selected to hide the file extentions on the new vista machine ... as for my lack of computer savy, you're right ... I'm not a hacker ... just a guy that likes to tinker with phones ... I've probably been flashing phones much longer than most people here ... I've either put custom os's on phones via kitchens or at a minimum done my own flashing of upgraded os's on every pda style phone I've ever used ... and that started with the kyocera 6035 ... and goes through every pda phone vzw or sprint have ever had ... only been with iphone and AT&T since april 09
I'll give you one thing though ... with all the people that tried to help ... you're the only one that saw the "forest through the trees" ... the iphone is slightly more confussing than ppc phones in that there are two sets of software to do everything ... mac and pc ... also there is the whole apple paranoia about modifying the phone ... with a ppc it's easy to change ringtones or alarm sounds ... with the iphone for instance ... the phone must be jailbroken to change the calendar alert sound by overwritting the alarm.caf file ... so maybe some other user will gain something from my experience ... again .. thanks for your help ... I do love the iphone ... and my only reason for jbing the phone was to be able to change the alarm.caf file ... I'm hard of hearing and can't hear apples little ding

I really like macs ... and will own another one someday ... but without Microsoft's financial bailout of mac long ago ... apple wouldn't exist today ... yes I know ... they only did it to prevent the whole monopoly thing ... but the facts are the facts ...
