Plugged it in, pressed the button and BAM, broken. Keeps erroring when I try to restore, can't get anywhere. Having to DFU it to get anywhere. An official update breaking a completely unhacked phone!

What's no fun is, and yes I'm sure the point of my stupidity here will be made, the photos I took over a fortnight in Japan are now probably gone because I hadn't saved them. Lucky iPhone was second to my real camera...

I was in the same situation. I can't even get mine to go into DFU mode. I've tried to restore on a Macbook and a Dell laptop, still can't get it to work. I've used two separate usb connectors and still can't get it to work. I created a new user account on my Macbook and still can't get it to work.

So I called Apple support and they said the errors I was getting meant I had a hardware failure. I now an appointment at the Apple Store in Fairfax to get it replaced.

I suggest you call Apple support about your issues. Most likely a hardware failure, too.

Ah bad luck, I've been lucky over the last few hours. DFUd, restored from a backup I made and got all my data back. Hope you're in warranty!

Yes, thankfully I am. I have an appointment on Friday afternoon at the Apple Store in Fair Oaks, Fairfax Virginia. Hopefully they can't fix it AND are out of white 16 gig 3G iPhones. :D

Haha good, and fingers crossed =D

Tell me about it. Hopefully things work out my way and they are "forced" to give me a replacement iPhone that happens to be a 3GS. :D

Yeah.. not going to happen. There are plenty of 3G phones to replace your 3G. They aren't going to give you a free ugrade.

Stranger things have happened. Although it is unlikely. Hence fingers crossed ^^
