Fellow fatties (er… I mean friends )…like so many of you, in 3 days, I’m embarking on my annual new year’s resolution to lose weight. I’m sure many of you have downloaded the free calorie tracker apps like Lose It, Livestrong, or MyFitnessPal. The problem is that I’ve tried these and I absolutely HATE counting calories! I last about four days and then fizzle out.

But alas! I have found some apps on App Advice’s “best of” list and these are definitely going to be in my weight loss cabinet! I’ve downloaded them all, and listed my favorite three apps from their list.

My absolute favorite: intelli-Diet
iTunes Link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/intelli-diet-app-weight-loss/id389335337?mt=8
Why I like it: For those like me who don’t like counting calories, this is the Rolls-Royce of meal planning. It automatically provides the foods I should be eating and even calculates the exact portion sizes.

My second favorite: FoodTrackerPro
iTunes Link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/foodtrackerpro-daily-eating/id365373648?mt=8
Why I like it: This app doesn’t provide meal plans, but is good at keeping tabs at the number of servings I should be eating across all the different food groups. Big thing again, no counting calories for these.

My last one: GymBuddy
Why I like it: Although this one isn’t a diet app, you need something to keep track of your exercise. But I think you need to continuously improve to get healthier, not just do the same thing you did last week. I like this app because it time and date stamps every set and rep you peform. Pretty useful if you ask me.

I’ve been using all 3 inter-changably since I binged during Christmas with the relatives and so far, so good! I’d be interested to hear what other people like or have used. I’d like to keep this to apps that don’t force you to count calories though. There are so many of those, so let me know if you find any meal planner apps that aren’t on this list

or you could just go swimming and gym eat sensibly and stop needing things to aid you... the most powerful tool to losing weight is self confidence, no app or diet plan is going to help you sustain your goal...

I think of apps as tools to use as part of your toolkit to help you with your goal. You do need intrinsic motivation as a prerequisite!

Anyway... I found another diet app to add to the meal planning list called Dietician. It's cool, but gives me a lot of frozen packaged foods, where I prefer whole foods like I get from the intelli-diet app.

Anyone try both?

not to bring you down or anything but your being obsessive over this whole app diet thing, it will never help you, think of it as a placebo, your probablt losing weight due to stress worrying about what calories your consuming and all that rubbish, like i said do lots of excercise eat sensibly and youl lose weight *HEALTHILY* i go to the gym and have seen people who were once slightly big and dieted with no excercise and have flabby skin, and can i ask what your weight is and what your ideal goal is? i also teach alot of people at the gym very interesting workouts which are built to maximise performance.. perhaps i could advise you on some information, and iv been studying and going gym for 5 years, i purposely get big (muscle wise) then allow myself to thin down so that each workout i do affects my body differently, kind of like an experiemnt..

I'd like to lose another ten or so pounds. I think its calories in versus calories out at the end of the day. But the reason I like meal planners is so like you said, I don't have to stress about counting calories, I can just focus on eating the right foods. that's why I like using the intelli-diet app so far along with foodtrackerpro and gymbuddy!

Found some more good ones... an app called goodfoodnearyou (when you're eating out). I'd stick to the meal planning apps above when you're at home though!
