next up same drive just plugged it into the seagate thunderbolt adapter.

look at how thunderbolt smokes usb3 at black magic test

look at thunderbolt smoke usb3 at aja test.

look at thunderbolt win at xbench test .

Well in the case of seagates usb3 vs seagates thunderbolt adapter.

thunderbolt is far faster. cost is a lot more 150 vs 25.

I will wait for the third case from oyen it may be a better usb3 chip.

Still in a way this points to lacies $199 rugged thunderbolt/usb3 128gb ssd as a good deal.

You get both cables ssd and a case.

I wish I could dis usb3 people properly as it is clearly inferior to thunderbolt when using ssds. But hey live and let live.

If you want a cheap inferior product like usb3 fine.

When I was young and foolish I used to like Hersey's chocolate.

Now burdick's or green n black taste far better.

I will load a mountain lion osx on this drive and run the new mini for a day or two. I am curious to see if it runs stable like thunderbolt does.

Could you try a regular hard drive ?

This is very interesting, as I was exploring one the same configuration, to boot a window installation fron an external HD.
I was debating between ans USB 3 enclosure ( most likeley the OWC elite pro mini) or the same seagate thunderbolt adatpter.
I will use a seagate momentous XT 750GB sata 3, since I have it spare.

Do you think you can redo your tests with just a normal hdd ?
I believe in that case there should not be any difference between TB and USB 3.

One more question: on the seagate TB adapter, can you just plug a bare 2.5" drive without any special enclosure ? Can you boot the mini from it ?

In Any case thanks again for the tests you did.

stoca

Very interesting!
With USB3 being a 5Gb/s (500MB/s at least ) protocol it is fascinating to see that it is reaching ~1/2 that in your test. This may be the controller chip Apple is using or something about any electronics in that cable (if there are)...

USB3 is WAY faster than FW400 or USB2 but of course TB looks mighty fine!

Since we are stuck with one port on a mini... Do you have any idea how much TB bandwidth is used up by a TB monitor?

yeah I will run the stock seagate usb3 hdd for tests. should come out to the same scores as the t-bolt. as for plugging a drive into a seagate t-bolt adapter I use a small piece of velcro stuck in-between the ssd and the t-bolt adapter

I have a boot issue for the 256gb ssd my new quad 2012 mini has 432gb of info. so I can't copy it to my ssd to test how it will boot. but I can copy my internal to the stock usb3 500gb seagate and test for booting.

cost for the black x is 70 bucks

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?S=1268&ID=1981

at amazon 52 bucks.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1V1HN1JDPMA7X3RETN40

first test of the stock seagate 5400rpm 500gb hdd in the seagate usb3 adapter doing 0 over write at 75 mb to 83 mb per second

same test on the t-bolt cable yields 80 to 84 mb.

then a black magic t-bolt

an aja t-bolt

last xbench t-bolt.

so if you are tight cash and get a usb3 and a fast hdd you can help your mini at a low cost.

the amazon blac x usb model is 52.

the amazon oyen model is 29

the amazon seagate is 25

a fast 2.5 inch scorpio black 750gb hdd is under 100.

A big 7200rpm 2tb hdd can be found for 99 but only works with the blac x.

I am going to clone an osx to the external usb3 then use it to run os just to see if it is stable.

I have used these with fw800 and usb2 under the name of rosewill. They ran very hot.

These do not run hot with a samsung 830gb ssd inside and they don't need the extra power wire that comes with this item.

I like this item and even though it is not as fast as a t-bolt case this is a perfect case for a sata II ssd. Also you can fit a tall hdd in it I have fit a 12.5 inch hdd in the rosewill fw800 case. I will run this for a boot drive for a week to see if it is stable.

Okay the oyen usb 3 drive came in. solid metal well built. has a usb3 cable and a secondary usb to 5volt cable if your external ssd/hdd need it.

I have a samsung 830 ssd which can get 400 write and 454 read inside the mini with a direct sata connection.

well the black magic test is far better for this then the usb3 seagate adapter cable.

this case is getting 232 write and 270 read vs

170 192 as seen above with the seagate usb3 cable.

look 232 write and 270 read vs 400 write and 454 read look bad but for real world this only counts with a clone to a second ssd or if you are over writing the drive with 0's.

on xbenches test the oyen case scores better then the seagate cable. the long reads and writes are much better

207 /284 vs 182/197 but random is a push 28.7/13.1 vs 28.8/12.7

aja the oyen wins

224/270 vs 166/192

this case offers

0 risk and a 30 dollar price.

so it is very tempting .

http://www.amazon.com/MiniPro-2-5-i...UTF8&qid=1351885709&sr=8-2&keywords=oyen+usb3

one last word this comes with 4 stick on rubber feet don't cover the screws when you attach the feet. you won't be able to swap the drive!
