3 weeks with the new Mini - Read this if you aren't sure about Apple ;)

OK, first time Mac user. Switched 3 week ago to a Mini 2.26 with 4 GB RAM, standard 120GB hdd (5,400RPM). Have ordered and received Vertex 120GB but haven't upgraded yet. Why?

Because the system as is, is plenty fast. After 40 minutes the Mini goes to sleep and when I want to use it again it takes only seconds to wake up and everything is back to normal. Everything I had used before 'loads' quickly (I know it's still active in the background) and is very usable. I don't think I need the quick boot up times I was after when I first ordered everything and I don't really do enough moving of huge files to warrant the massive speed increase.

Still I've got it and I'll chuck it in some time soon. But why fix something if it ain't broke?

I don't play games anymore these days, so I don't need the big graphics power but I do amateur photography and it's very nice for that.

Transfer rates over the network (connected at 1Gbps) from the Time Capsule back to the Mini hits about 300Mbps, 100 Mbps more than my 1.5 year old XP machine. To the TC it's about 200Mbps.

I've got two screen connected, one 30" Samsung 305T PLus running at 2560x1600 and one Samung 19" at 1280 x 1024.

Yes I do have the occasional flicker issue from the Mini-Display port to dual-DVI adaptor but I don't really care. Fingers crossed Apple will fix that in a software update soon. On average I get it once a day. I sleep the screen and when they wake up all os good again.

Just bought Elgato's eyeTV and that works heaps better than my old dual DTV tuner in my XP machine. Mostky because the software is way more integrated into OS X and little things like being able to use the Apple remote in eyeTV are very nice little bonuses.

So I know people are having issues with the new iMac 4850 and wouldn't be happy either.

However, my experience has been nothing but excellent.

I brought my first mac in January this year. It's a mac min, and I love it so much! I love leopard and I think the mac mini, even the old model, is more than capable of handling things like Photoshop and Illustrator, which I use on a regular basis.

I sold off my super powerful and super expensive PC with Vista and switched to an iMac G4; while I save for a 24" iMac. OS X has been such a revelation, it works - no oddities no funny behavior. It works as I'd expect it and is far more intuative than Windows.

Perhaps. Are you defending Apple at every turn and expect perfection from them? Then yes

Again, I realise a lot of people on here have had Apple products for way longer than me and have been through many highs and lows with Apple this was really intended as a reality check and to say that is it very refreshing from an ex Windows boy.
