iCloud 30 days setting in messages in cloud doesn't seem to do anything

Hi,

I currently have 11GB of messages stored in the messages app (in cloud).
I set the retention to 30 days but it does not seem to affect anything.

Maybe I am misunderstanding this setting. Does that mean, 30 days of messages are stored across the devices (and the cloud) and everything older than 30 days is purged from the cloud?
