30 Mbps

I didn't know where else to put this question, and i have a 2010 mini so it goes here lol

I recently moved, and they have fiber optics in the area. I selected their cheapest plan, 15 Mbps. (the plans go up to 100Mbps if you so choose). I got my first bill today and they have upgraded me to 30Mbps, no additional charge. Doing full downloads/uploads to work, plus a couple of torrents, PLUS youtube streaming, I get maximum 3.9 MBps(That's megabytes)... download AND uploads.

my question is... WTF am i suppose to do with this speed? I mean other than pirate stuff like a mofo, there aren't many websites that can fill this bandwidth. so my question is WHY? even when i upload to my web server they cant take in 3.9 MBps lol

anyways, is there something i am missing here?
 
People are starting to stream large files in mass numbers and the trend is just going to continue. This is just preparing for the future, that they'll have to upgrade down the road again anyway.
 
just blows my mind lol... i guess for once i am actually ahead of the curve. point being most web servers can't feed me that much data.. Torrents can, and i post a screenshot as an example. i already own this game and it was just a speed test(had the most seeds), but OMG!!!

anyways, must be gettin old lol. just blows me away

I'm sorry but you say you have 30+ but are only getting 3 MB on the downloads, does that mean I could be suffering the same thing?

looks like you are getting 60 mbps download and only 6 mbps upload. This is the first time my upload and downloads were the same, looks like your uploads are capped.

I am only getting 3+Megabyte downloads, because 30 megaBITS roughly translates to that (1024 BiTs per byte, 1024 Bytes per Megabyte).. really wish we could get rid of the whole BIT useage for network speeds, but no one listens to me :p
 
If your torrenting, that 30MBs will only get you around 3-4MBs in actual download speed. I have like 10MBs and usually hit a little over 1 MBs.

Mbps=megaBITS per second

MBps=megaBYTES per second

Damn, why would I be capped? Or is it usually part of the service one pays for?

i just tried that same speed test you posted, my download was ok, but the upload was capped. MOST isp's cap the upload speeds and to me it looks like that site doesnt truly test your upload speeds.

according to them, my upload is alot less than my download, but that isnt true

This is weird, I thought that site was well trusted and such, so much for Comcast's acclaimed PowerBoost

try DSLreports.com. limited servers you can choose from, but is more like what you would get from a random webserver. and i had comcast before, they do cap their uploads. speedboost just gives you 60 seconds of a decent speed, but then caps it. that isnt what is capping that test tho, you are seeing speedboost work, that site just isnt right lol
 
That puts it into KBPS or something like that and even the nerdy self I am, cannot figure out what that even means, or what it is converted into MBPS

1024 kilobytes=1 megabytes

then some jack asses throw in kiloBITS.. WTF?


see why they should drop the whole damn bit crap lol

multiply by 10 and you get close enough :p

Okay, you're way off here.

8 bits = 1 byte
1024 megabits = 128 kilobytes

For x megabits per second (in bandwidth), divide x by 8 and you get kilobytes per sec.

For kilobytes per sec, multiply by 8 and you get megabits per second.

Bits per second has been around for a long long time. Back in the old days, you had modems with a baud rate.
 
Because the Internets is a series of tubes, your speed is only going to be as fast as the smallest tube and dependent on the host service provider's tube.
