I was wondering how many folks opted to buy a MobileMe account with 20gb of extra space (in cloud) for $69 instead of spending $100 for the next model.

$130 for the next model? Not sure what that really means. Has Apple announced a price increase or something with new features?

Personally I always get my MobileMe renewals on eBay. They can easily be had for $50 and get the seller to just email the activation code.

My bad, it should have been $100 for each tier of flash storage (correction made). I must have been thinking about the $130 they are charging to put in the radio.

I have yet to experience MobileMe. I have been thinking about it for a while now to use for work pdf and document storage and whatnot but I haven't pulled the trigger on that. Do you think it would be worth losing a couple of GB to take advantage of MobileMe?

The MobileMe iDisk experience is mostly terrible (pitifully slow, maddening and irrational sync conflicts). I would use DropBox or something similar for just keeping files in the cloud. I keep MobileMe mostly for the awesome address book synchronizing and some photo sharing. Of course, there are cheaper/free alternatives for that too that are pretty good.

same here. i have been known to buy several years worth ahead of time. i think i still have about 3 codes for 3 more years left. if you see mobileme at a low price, buy it.

Thanks for the tip. I thought about dropbox but thought that there may be future improvement in UL&DL speeds with the new Apple Facility/Server Farm that they are putting in NC. I think this facility may have more to do with their purchase of LaLa and media streaming but we'll see. Regardless of MobileMe I am still happy with my iPad choice of 32Gb.:) If Apple isn't aware by now that there are MM issues (they have to be) I think that the iPad will make it glaringly clear...

With services like Dropbox and Google's sync features there is not reason at all to use MobileMe.

I have found the same. Dropbox is awesome for files compared to MobileMe which is slow and seems to be constantly syncing whenever it feels like.

MobileMe for calendars and contacts works great for me though.

They have a free trial. Kick the tires and see if you find it worth keeping.

Well the deed is done so I will have to see when it arrives. I think that the purchase will fuel my scrutiny and strengthen my resolve. I tend to tinker with trials due to a feeling of unforeseen restrictions that may impede a full understanding of the product. Thank you for the tip though. Hindsight 20/20;)

Pretty much. I don't think I'll be renewing my MobileMe account when it expires. There are free services that do the same things better for free. I do like the features for tracking and securing a lost iPhone though.

Good point about tracking an iPhone. Thankfully I've never had to use it, but its nice to know its there.

However, its not worth the $99 ($69) a year.

I use MobileMe mainly for the over-the-air iCal/Address Book syncing... plus I like my email address lol. I will say that I have never and will never pay the $99 though. I just recently bought a renewal for the second year in a row, off of Amazon for $65, and then just plugged in the code. Worked like a charm.

or buy MobileMe on Amazon for a lot less than that.

Apple: $69.00 + $6.90 (tax) = $75.90

Amazon: $64.99 (or lower) = $64.99

I'll grant you that it has gotten more expensive recently, but $10.91 is still a fairly reasonable discount.

I recieved the MobileMe from fedex and promptly went to the Apple store and returned it. They will be mailing a check for $99.99 or so the receipt says:cool:

Reason for return: Besides the solid advice from fellow MacR forum members (for which I am very grateful) I have also found more reason on the Apple support website. Some folks have lost thousands of contacts and notes from their Mac, PeeCee, and iPhones all in one night. When they contacted Apple they were told they could not be retrieved and were lost forever.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Just to give some balance to the thread......I have never had a problem with MobileMe and find it really good/useful.
No syncing issues here and I store all my documents on it, sync my iMac & iPhone to it (iCal, address book, bookmarks, email etc etc).

I have never lost any of my contacts, notes, etc. since I've been using MobileMe; however, I do make a habit of backing up my calendar and contacts manually from time to time and I also back up my entire Mac to my Time Capsule and to CrashPlan online. Even if MobileMe were to somehow screw everything up, I have ways to easily retrieve that information again. No matter what you use to sync everything, you should always have a backup.

The DropBox app is nice and all but you only get 2 GB of storage for free which really isn't a lot.

I'm not trying to drive traffic here or something, but I have built a iPad app and i'm putting the finishing touches on a iPhone app for my Cloud Storage/File hosting service that will give 20 GB for free. 100 GB in a paid version, and will have just about all and some more features of the mobile me/dropbox app.

I built the app specifically because I wanted more storage on my iPad with out having to pay for the 64 GB version.

I back everything up on an external hd and use my iPhone as a back-up for outlook on the PeeCee via iTunes. I don't back up near as often or as thorough as I would like hence a need for MM, but its something.

I realize that out of the untold amounts of MobileMe users the only ones that you hear from are the ones who have had problems. That being said, I think that I would have totally been ok with the purchase had I had some indication of new improvements or a refresh, so to speak, of the MM platform. I was going to ask the genius weather he know of all new MM accounts being stored at the new facility in NC. I believe that regardless of the MM, dropbox, google sync, etc. outcome, a backup should be done via hardline as often as possible.
