Startup disc grayed out in preferences.
30 seconds before my Macbook Air finds my bigger after-market 256SSD that I installed last week.
It is working fine after the boot, just get this 30 seconds gray screen on boot or reboot now before the normal boot screen launches.
Not sure on how to fix the slow boot detection and grayed out start-up disc in preferences.

Click the padlock in the lower left corner, enter your admin password, and single click your SSD disk icon to select it as the Startup volume.

Wow, so unbelievably simple to fix that when you know how. Thanks a million CoastalOR. It is now immediately booting and rebooting with the chime and boot screen same as before.
I was ready to return the SSD as buggy !

I've locked and unlocked that pane before, I just was blind to it being currently locked in the bottom left !!

Thanks to the other poster but everything now working !
