31GB iMovie Project to iDVD: How to brun!?

I imported about two or two and a half hours of video via iMovie using my Sony Digital Video Camera. I have the timelines setup and iDVD chapters in place. I can import the project into iDVD 4 but it says I can't burn the movie to a DVD because of it's size/length. The size of the iMovie project is 31GB, I have to check for the exact time. I don't want to cut down the movie a lot, but I still want to burn it. I know iDVD can burn 2 hours on one disc so maybe I can cut it down just a bit. Any advice?

I am working with old home movies so I don't want to go cuting scenes out. I have the latest iMovie and iDVD, I am on a PowerMac G4 450mhz (It's slow but, it gets the job done.) with Mac OS X Panther. I will post back again to tell you the exact length of the iMovie video.

DV is about 13 gigs per hour so it looks like you have almost 2.5hrs of video. Why don't you just split it in half and burn 2 DVDs?

Thanks guys! I like the special edition idea. But I dunno how to split the project, maybe I'll just drag half of the clips to a new folder. I'll keep you posted and tell you how it turns out.
 
syncing

when i burned my movie from Imovie to Idvd, the sound is off by like .5 seconds, why? and how can i fix it?

I dunno why that would happen.... I burned a DVD before and it came out alright. I'm using a G4 450mhz with added DVD-R Pioneer A05, what are you using?

Well I split up the project into three seprate iMovie Projects. I am bruning Disc 1 of 3 now. iDVD 4 says "Stage 3: Asset encoding..."

Wish me luck...
 
just make 2 imovie projects and 2 idvd projects and make yourself two discs, will be just as good.

Yeah the G4 is taking it's sweet time...I started the bruning process at around 4:00pm, it's doing the Best Quality (60 minutes) It now says "Stage 3: Accets Encoding..." and the time is 7:35pm I burned a 30 minute DVD with iDVD 3 before and I let it go overnight, but when I went to bed it said "Stage 5: Finishing..."or something I hope this will be done soon, like 10 or 11 pm, heh. I wanted to show my parents but, I guess I'll have to wait.

My dad claims the G4 is fast enough:p. But, maybe it's time to save up for a G5. The G4 is 450mhz with 768mb of RAM and runs iMovie speedy but iDVD lags a bit. Well I'll tell you how the DVD turns out.

Well the whole video is about 2 hours and 30 minutes, I didn't want to edit anything out since they are Home Movies. I also wanted the quality at it's best so I made each iMovie project a bit under 60 minutes so it can burn to DVD in High Quality. So I have 3 iMovie projects and 3 iDVD projects...Let the DVDs burn ;)

I burned the 1st disc and it came out fine! Took about 6 or 7 hours to encode and burn it. I am burning the 2nd disc now. When I work on the thrid one I will turn on "Encoding in Backround" which I didn't notice before...:rolleyes:
 
Be sure you're using media that's compatible with your burner.
For example, using 4x media in a 2x burner will cause it to burn at 1x(!)
I found this out the hard way.

With iDVD 3, I couldn't tell the difference in quality between the 90 minute and 60 minute quality. I've yet to burn in iDVD 4.

However, I burnt a 4x DVD (data) in the Finder (should burn at 1x speed in my 2x drive) but it only took 15 minutes to burn (about half full - 2.5 GB of data). However, then it said it was burning again and the slider went across for another 15 minutes. It came out fine but I didn't understand this so I opened up the console and it said it burnt at 2x ("Requested burn at 47x speed, actual burn speed was 2x") and that the second part was verification. It is so far the only DVD I have burnt from the Finder, so I'll see if it 'verefies' with the 2x discs. If my 4x disc really did burn at 2x (not 1x) I will be a happy bunny.

Anyway, good luck with the project. My dad wants me to burn all his old videos onto DVDs (complete and unabridged :rolleyes: :D). Luckily for me, my computer is much faster than yours. :p

Hehe, yeah well ur Mac is faster :p

I have a PowerBook like your but it's the older model. (867mhz DVD-R 640mb RAM) I am going to transfer the project to this Mac but I need to clear some hard drive sapce first :D A DV Bridge would be great, recording from a VCD to Digital Camera to iMovie takes twice as long as a bridge would...maybe tell him to buy you that and then you'll do it :p Be prepared for plenty of hard drive sapce to vanish...

My 80GB has already been filled up a couple of times with DV footage. It's amazing that you can delete a couple of files and gain 30GB! I'm looking into hopefully getting a 7200rpm Firewire hard drive at some point when I can afford one.

You seem to have hard experience on just how much space DV footage takes up. Perhaps you should save up enough money to get a very big disk (with a capacity of 250, 300, 500, or even 1000 GB [1 Terabyte]) so you won't run out of space for a while. The question of how such a huge volume of data will be backed up remains, unless you're willing to get 2 big drives of identical capacity - one as the primary drive, the other as the backup.

I just went that route recently. Save yourself some $$$ and buy a fast internal IDE drive and put it in a firewire enclosure. I went the fw800 route with a 250gb/7200/8mb buffer drive for $300US after rebate. It would have been $450 to buy an already assembled fw800 drive with those specs.
