I didn't pre-order yet as I am a bit worried about the temperatures of the 32-core GPU version. Has anyone got some good guesstimates based on extrapolation?

In the meantime, I will wait for some reviews to see if it will thermal throttle with 32-cores.

Was the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M TDP 50W? I never had a 16" so I don't know. Looks like the M1 Max 32c GPU is roughly around 55-60W from Apple's graphs, but no way to tell until someone has a unit to test.

M1's 8-core GPU max at 15 watts, quick math give you around 60 watts. This is quite low compared to most discrete GPUs. This is a very rough calculation and is not the correct way to 'estimate' power consumption, only to give a rough number to look at.

Hard to tell.

Even if you could estimate correctly the TDP of M1 Pro and M1 Max under max load, you wouldn't be able to draw a direct comparison with the old Intel MacBook Pros since the new ones have a completely new cooling system (which Apple says increases the airflow by 50%).

It's certainly possible given Apple's history of... less than ideal thermal design for high power workstations/laptops (iMac/Macbook Pro,) and given Apple's quoting performance equivalent to an RTX 3080M (and power usage in the 60W range, whereas traditionally 13" MBP have used chips in the 35-45W range)

I went ahead and ordered a 32C 14" to test drive so I'll report back when I get it (if everyone else hasn't already)

I think this can happen with the 14” only since its smaller and probably smaller vents
But again, maybe, it depends what’s underneath the 14”

I think they learned their lesson, what was super insightful on the slide presentation is that they compared on battery performance as well. I don't think we will have the thermal issues we had with Intel in the previous 16 inch macbook pro. I went all in on this purchase with the 32 core, if it thermals or get's too hot in the lap, it's a definite return.

When did they say 3080M equivalence? I missed that.

Edit: I see where you are getting that from. The GPU graph that shows the footnote of the Razer Blade Advanced 15 and the MSI Raider something or another. If you type in the model numbers into Google, they show the 3080M. Nice.

They updated the cooling to move 50% more air - and these chips are extremely efficient so I would not be surprised if they can sustain loads for a long time. I would guess there may be some thermal throttling after awhile, so if you’re really worried, maybe just wait for all the reviews and tests that will inevitably come out.

Well, CPU = 30 watt max and M1 Max 32 GPU = 55-60 watt max. It does come down to 85-90 watt that needs to be dissipated if everything is run at full power and that is a lot of juice to get out of the system. So it is not going to be cool and silent under those circumstances, but all in all I still have high hopes for a good balance.

So I decided to order it anyway, the 16” MBP with 32-core GPU. The 16” MBP should be able to handle a 50W GPU most likely.

It has a long shipping time as I did some BTO options, so i can always cancel it if their are some cooling problems.

in the 16" it will sure be cool and no issues...the question is about 14" that also come with the maximum of 96W brick...so if that system draws under full load more than 100W, your battery will drain instead of charge
So, i still think the cpu=20W and the 32 gpu around 60W with the other consumers to tops 90W
Again, 90W in total....while a razer 13-14" with dGpu draws 120W with half of the performance..

I thought about this too. I might purchase a standalone 140W if the 96W is limiting, but I doubt I'll be able to draw out the full potential.

I just can't stand having a large laptop.
