32bit EFI / 64 bit kernel

If I understand this post correctly, there is nothing in the hardware or even firmware of the Mac Pro 1,1 that stops it from booting the 64bit OSX kernel, Apple just need to enable it in software. Apple

That is true but don't expect, or even hope, for it to happen. 64-bit kernel is overhyped though.

Indeed. However, once Apple moves exclusively to 64bit kernels, that leaves those with 32bit EFIs eating dust however capable their hardware would be.

With all the effort going into jailbraking iOS devices, and all the amazing feats they do to bypass Apple's attempts in blocking them, you'd think that something so trivial as enabling 64bit EFI or 64bit kernel booting would be available already. In the famous words of Jeremy Clarkson: "How hard can it be?"

Just to add that apparently the 32EFI is a limiting factor in the choice of GFX cards for the 1,1 Mac Pro. Currently newer ATI cards seem to work unlike their Nvidia counterparts. However, I believe it's a matter of time before ATI drops EFI32 support. As a side point, the fact that the 1,1 Mac Pro doesn't have PCI 2.0 hurts its viability in future video upgrades as well.
