As I am planning to upgrade my 21.5 inch iMac late 2012, I did some research and conventionally it is only possible to upgrade to 16 gb with 2 X 8 GB rams. Of cause we know the specs of the ram needed (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/1600DDR3I16P/). However, out of curiosity I googled '32gb kit (2 x 16gb) ddr3l-1600 sodimm' instead of the 16 gb ram kit to see if such Ram kit is available and this is what I found on crucial.com : https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ddr3...-149;-2048meg-x-64---149;--ct2kit204864bf160b I looked at the specs and unless I have missed something, this is the bigger ram of their 2X8GB ram kit. The possibility is that you can upgrade your 27 inch late 2012 to 64GB Ram and for your 21.5 inch iMac to 32GB Ram! Just want to gauge your opinion on such possibility and like to ask if anyone has already done that.

The 21.5” is limited to 16GB of DRAM and the 27” is limited to 32GB of DRAM. There are no known official or unofficial reports of DRAM capacity that high in those Macs to my knowledge. I have a late 2013 iMac that is maxed out at 32GB of DRAM. Also, the CPUs in the 2012 iMac max out at 32GB of DRAM based on their listing in the Intel ARK - https://ark.intel.com
