its been a busy bank holiday today ;)

Unfortunately this has nothing to do with apple, as the system I use, CATIA, doesn't run on mac :(

but, it keeps me entertained :D

I don't know if it's awesome or extremely sad that you modelled the Enterprise.

Nah, that's awesome :D

How long did it take to model?

I've gotta say, as a fellow 3D artist, that's quite flipping impressive! I especially like how you've modelled the various decks and interiors in addition to the external hull.

My only criticism is the material you used for the outer hull. It just looks a little too much like plastic IMO. Also in the final image where you have the planet, it still has that too-perfect feel. But that may also be due to the renderer you used. Does CATIA have its own render engine, or did you import it into a 3rd party product like vray?

I haven't started to play with textures yet, its just the default with a few colours. I did try to add some lights to the model, but I think its reaching the limits of CATIA :(

not sure what to try next

See if Catia (never heard of it) can export out your geometry. Then quickly pick up a 3D package that's OSX native. Like Blender, Modo, Maya, C4D, etc.

Nice work!

I have worked with Catia before and its a impressive software, one of the most accurate i guess, im used to work modeling Yachts and Sailboats for a 5-axis CNC, and pal, if your model is in the scale you can easily build it hehehe
im just wondering if you own the technology to make it "work", btw, you can export it to IGS file and open it on Rhinoceros or Maya or 3Dmax and render it propperly, i know Catia render still quite limited but they improve it on every upgrade.

Ive had some stints with CATIA an Pro-E exports where we tried to get it into Maya, Max and SI. Ive had better luck with formZ back in the day :) Nice job, love the interior.
As far as CNC, Id love to see that built in real form :)

That's damn impressive, though I say that about ANYTHING made with professional software. I'm completely incapable of using such software. One semester of AutoCAD...can't use it. One semester of PhotoShop...still can't use it.

However, I have found something rather incredible. I downloaded the trial of Modo 401, and was able to make these all within the same night:

Click

(the bottom left is a jet engine, the right is a lightsaber. I w1n in g33k points :p)

The fact that I was able to make anything at all has made me interested in courses in 3D modeling, but I'm afraid that more popular applications might be:

a) Too professional for me to grasp
b) Not available for OS X

Can anyone, then, recommend a program I could study that would not exhibit these issues?

Ive been up and down the 3D Highway for years. From Swivel 3D to Maya 2011.
It looks like you found an app that'll get you going creatively and you sound like your having fun too. Id stick with that for now.
I teach Maya at base level and its a tough app to start with if you haven't had any 3D experience. I tried Modo years ago and liked it, but never bothered to put it into our workflow. We haven't even tried MudBox yet.

Good luck and have fun, you'd be surprised how much you will learn ;)

I have some friends who are professional modelers, and most use Maya. Most of them also like Modo as a 2nd or 3rd option.

...so I agree with mBox... stick with Modo for now.

I'm able to do a lot with Modo, so much so I'm surprised.

The problem is, I don't know where to get educated on it without shelling out bajillions to Luxology.

I am doing a lot, but I feel like Earthworm Jim when he enters that innumerable number into that combination safe, only to find there is a button beside the safe to unlock in the case of emergencies.

D'oh

good stuff, Im a Video games modeller, I use 3ds Max. I wish they would release it for mac.... im sick of boot camping JUST for max now... (Since steam solved the gaming problem :p)

I'm sure there must be some learning resources scattered around the internet.

Digital-Tutors seems to be a decent resource, though there's a $45/month fee to access their tutorials.
The internet is full of decent tutorials. If you want to spend the money try Digital Tutors. Their good :)

You can find a whole load of free Modo tutorials through the Help menu.

Personally, I think the tutorials they sell are very good value. Some really comprehensive modelling projects are only $20 (eg. Here & Here )

nothing beats trying it on your own. There's enough resources on the internet thatll get you going :)
