You need to install Windows.

Then you install 3D Studio Max like you would on any other computer.

Many thanks :)

I see... I guess I will still wait until a 100% Mac version will be released, since I do not want to install Windows on our Macs in the office... I might have to start using Cinema 4D or Adobe Maya instead...

I'd say let your wish for an OSX version be known to Autodesk. Shoot them a mail about it. The more people do this, the greater the chances are that an OSX version would see light of day eventually.
(That said, we are talking about AutoDesk here.... a behemoth with virtually no concern for their paying customers.)

Autodesk Maya (not Adobe, not sure why you said Adobe) is a good alternative and it's native Mac. They have a nice free edition for non commercial use that I use. I'm a 3d studio max user (from many years ago) and Maya is pretty good.

And as we're well aware, they are the 3d studio max guys too.

I use MAX VIZ and SketchUP. I have used MAYA in the past and find it to be much better than VIZ, about as good as MAX, but harder to use than both. I have not used it on a MAC, PC only.

If all you need is 3D software, yeah, plenty of good Mac 3D software. Pick a couple (you'll need more than one). You'll be happy.

But here's the thing. Thanks to Fusion and Desktop, Max IS a Mac application. So is XSi, and all those other things that you THOUGHT were PC-only. These apps live in the dock, are archived via Time Machine, output searchable in Spotlight...Seriously, all that's left are keyboard shortcuts and window dressing. If you can learn 3D software, you can learn to cope with the control key and the absence of 3 colored dots in the upper left.

I could go on about the reasons why Mac is the just about the LEAST preferred platform for 3D development, but it really is beside the point. The real point is, stop complaining. Stop waiting for developers to do what they don't NEED to do. Hunt down people from VMware and Parallels and buy them drinks. Name your children after them. Thanks to a wise choice by Apple (hey, buy THEM drinks too), you can now do the impossible -- run MORE software on your Mac, in a completely integrated fashion -- than any PC user will ever have available.

Sorry for the rant.

But here's part 2.

Buy the box of Windows. It won't hurt your Mac. It won't make you hate children and bunnies. Your hair won't fall out. You won't start liking the New York Yankees. You're 2 pieces of software away from what you want.

And certainly if you NEED Max or other 3D software on your Mac, no excuses.

Okay, rant part 2 is ended. Seriously, poke around here. You'll find plenty of creative and technical pros who are doing this. It works.

Oops. Third rant sneaking in. **I** feel better anyway, and that's what counts. :D

Thanks. I've got that already... I have been using it since version 4 for PC, but I expected not to have to install Windows on the Mac... I guess it won't be this time I will put the PC aside yet.

Oops, I'd actually planned more details than that but I only got as far as getting a link. I only just discovered that I'd hit submit (I was at work)...
