3G iPhone 2 for Christmas?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070907/bs_nm/interdigital_outlook_dc

(sorry if it's been posted already)

I have been saying this for a while - that there will be an IPhone V2 much sooner than the early adopters wished. . .I think in time for Christmas or a the very latest MW.

I think this week's head shot by Stevo to the early adopters is an indication that he will do whatever is needed to hit his numbers.

So. . .the wife is wanting one but I think we will hold off. At a minimum there will be an upgrade in the storage in the next month or two.

By early next year, IF the 3G comes out, I might have to upgrade and sell this one. But, honestly, the iPhone is a lot faster in this area than any of the other smartphones I have used. AT&T only has EDGE in the area, so I don't think that it's really a concern. Maybe they will have their 3G network deployed by then.

I'm sure Jobs and co. have a clause up their sleeve somewhere.

wouldnt someone know about a FCC filing if they were coming out with a 3g iphone by Christmas time in the states? From what I understand, they would still need to file all the documentation, etc to release another phone. And from what I have read, this hasnt happened, therefore the earliest a new iphone would be out is atleast 6 months down the road??

has it been ruled out that the iPhone isn't already 3G capable and can be activated via a software update?

I was under the impression it was completely different hardware and that 3g hardware wouldn't fit properly to give the smaller form factor at this time... not to mention consume battery life even more than it already does.

It's a done deal. The iPhone will require 3G (more like 3.5G HSDPA) if it is to work properly across Asia next year.

The iPhone will be 3G capable and it will be either this year or next year.

Exactly, had this phone come with 3G I wouldn't say there was anything (atleast hardware wise) missing.

It's a shame it wasn't done the first time around.

But for Apple to release iPhone V2 there needs to be more than just 3G or more memory. What other things would be update with this newer version?

Just so we are all clear on this: unless you live in a MAJOR city, you have no reason to be excited about 3G, as there is no 3G coverage. For example, I live in NY. But 3G only covers NY City and the freaking Hamptons, so Im SOL.

I personally think a 3G iPhone would have sucked (unless it had EDGE as well? I dont know if thats how it works)

Yes, the 3G atleast for the Samsung Blackjack I had had EDGE backwards compatability. For AT&T to offer a data plan this will have to be the case.

You can't say it's not worth having 3G cause it's not widely available. 3G is the future (more so a present day thing in europe and already old news in asia). If phone manufacturers didn't add these features to phones then nothing would ever expand. Apple and AT&T must push the technology.

EDGE is simply too slow and can't even do data and voice simultaneously. (not sure if 3G can)

Or you could live down here where 98% of the population has HSDPA coverage. Or Japan where it's 100%.

Just because 3G sucks in the US doesn't mean it sucks everywhere else. You guys may just have to come to terms with the rest of the world getting a more technically advanced phone before you do. Oh wait... that happens all the time.

Yeah, but then we'd have to live with out heads stuck in the sand, like the Japanese do. I don't think most of them were even aware that the US and Japan were at war and that Japan lost 60 years ago. Not that I don't like Japan, or the Japanese, cause I LOVE them.

Seriously, the phone will get 3G soon enough. For the US, it really is not a big deal, as 99% of the country just doesn't have it, so it would do little good for most of us, and would have likely delayed the phone. Better for Apple to get the product out and start making money. When 3G is more widely deployed (on AT&T), and the next version of iPhone comes out, people that want it will buy a new iPhone, and sell their old one on eBay, or give it to a family member that could use it.

I'm sorry? You're calling the Japanese introverted?

Xenophobic and revisionists, maybe? They are like the world's biggest "click" too. Well, maybe the second biggest, as Apple users seem to be the biggest ;)

Their media and especially their educational system is censored to make them look and feel better about themselves, or so it would seem to me. Just an odd observation.

Also, being early adopters of new technology has it's down side for the Japanese. When they get Vista on the PCs, it exposed a security flaw of the IPv6 implementation over there, as Vista asks for a v6 address, and the integrated broadband gateway would hand one out. Since there was no security there, the PCs were exposed to the rest of the v6 network with a real (and accessible) address. Again, just an odd example.

Any, I honestly think that EDGE is fine for me. Hell, I couldn't get faster service here if I HAD a 3G iPhone.

3G bands in the US and EU and Japan are different. So if a 3G phone comes out for Asia it most likely would not have 3G data coverage in the US

There is not going to be a new iPhone for Christmas. I don't care how paranoid some folks have become after the price drop, there is NO reason Apple is going to make their current iPhone obsolete this quickly. And there is no way the early adopters are going to rush out and stand in line for a 3G version after being bitten so soon, so Apple really has zero incentive to rush a new device onto the market. Mid to late next year, I can see it because people have short memories. Christmas? Keep dreaming. Not happening.

Are you kidding, have you looked at a US history textbook lately, or listened to any of our mainstream media? I think we have the Japenese beat when it comes to revising history to meet the perception we wish ourselves and others to have about our country.

Lets get the facts straight on this issue.

A 3G phone is BACKWARDS compatable on 2G and GPRS networks. That with the tri band abilities of the iPhone will make it work on ANY GSM network. If you take the iPhone to Japan or Australia it will work perfectly as is. (you may not be happy with the roaming bill though!)

There are reports that backup Apple's claims that the current 3G chipset will not fit in the iPhone (without making the phone larger) and would decrease battery life up to 1/2. Until these issues have been resolved- I don't think you will see 3G in the phone. I agree with Apple's decision that battery life is more important then network speed.

Most major metro areas of the US have 3G. I'm tired of people saying 3G does not exist in the US. Yes, 3G in Iowa might be hard to find but in the major metro areas, 3G has been deployed AT&T. T-Moble is different story.

Do you think Apple will make a "Export Only" verions of the iPhone? I don't think they will. Can you immagine if they did, people would be snaching them up in the US and trying to make them work on AT&T!

I personally think you would see very little speed difference in the applications that currently run on the iPhone but for some reason Aussies and people that live in Europe keep saying "People here will not buy a 2G phone". I think they will and they will love it.

People miss the obvious problem with 3G right now in that it's a bonified battery drainer.

I remember when the Samsung Blackjack came out and people WHO HAD 3G coverage were hacking the phone to disable 3G because it impacted their battery so much.

Personally I'd rather have slow speeds and have the phone last the day or two rather than blazing speeds and the thing die in a few hours. That's just me.

Or you could live down here where 98% of the population has HSDPA coverage.

Major meto areas of the US have 3G just like AU. But we have lots of people that live in rural areas here- unlike AU. You have 98% of your population living in your metro areas. We don't.

So its going to take longer to deploy something requires a hardware upgrade to the system at every tower in the US as it would Europe, Japan or AU.

The US has more square meter coverage of 3G then AU does. We just have more people living in more places.

Oh this would be so wonderful. I personally don't care about battery life. It'll be plenty fine with 3g.
