Trying to update a friend's non JB 3.0.1 3G to jailbroken (or even non jailbroken) to 3.1.2. Want to preserve the baseband for options on unlocked and jailbreakable.

I created an IPSW from pwnage tool 3.1.4 using the Apple 3.1.2 file (Mac OS X based). Used the simple method, answering non jb'n before and using a official carrier for the 'activate'. Modem version is 04.26.08.

Tried 'option' restore method to choose the file in iTunes, and it gives an error that it's not a valid restore file.

I thought from reading the Dev's blog site, plus here, plus a few other sites that a 3G can be restored to any version.

I know I'm doing some step wrong, or misunderstanding something. Anyone help out?

TIA.

Are you sure it's a 3G? What's the model number?

I know I'm pretty stupid, but not that stupid. :D Model number is MB048LL.

Also, what is the exact name of the firmware file you are trying to restore to?

iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore.ipsw

and I've also tried to change the name to:

iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw (which I've never had to do before, but just trying things).

One other tidbit, don't know if it matters. I only created the file via pwnage tool. The iPhone 3G was not connected during the process, so it didn't get kicked into DFU restore mode before trying the process of 'option restore' in iTunes.

OH, and yes, it was connected to the iMac for the iTunes process. Continuation of the 'not that stupid' part.

One last question/explanation for this....

If I use pwnage tool 3.1.4 in expert mode to create the custom IPSW from this filename:

iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw (dl'd from Apple)

and choose these options in pwnage tool:

I choose not to activate (is on an AT&T plan currently), no Cydia packages, no custom packages (not loading Cydia/Icy), no custom boot logos, and then everything is grey'd out in Bootneuter (except it is auto checked for upgrade to 4.6, and unlock baseband, and then auto delete BootNeuter.app)...

Then I will have upgraded this 3G to 3.1.2 like it was back in Oct '09 (when 3.1.2 came out), but preserved the unlock and jailbreak feature for the future (whether I use pwnage tool again to get Cydia), or if I use the other methods (like blackrain and/or redsnow).

Basically just wanting to get it to be a stock 3G 16gb with 3.1.2, and what state it will be after doing it via pwnage tool with these options.....

Versus, doing 'option restore' and choose the stock 3.1.2 software and achieve the same thing (cause the other tools can get me there since 3.1.2 can be jailbroken/unlocked)?

Thanks again!
