3G iPad in Canada......

I realise nothing has been officially released yet, I'm just more looking for opinions on this one.....

I've been holding out for the 3G version, and like everyone else was a lilttle disappointed with the delay announced yesterday. Now I'm thinking of taking the short drive to the USA and picking up a 3G when they are released.

My question is (and this is framed more at fellow Canadians) do you think we'll be able to buy JUST the microSIM here, or do you think I'll be out of luck and stuck with an AT+T iPad that will be useless here. I know that they are sold unlocked, but if I can't purchase a local carrier's microSIM I'm kind of screwed anyway......

Also thinking of just picking up the WiFi model and waiting until 2G version gets released to upgrade to the 3G model......

We know that Rogers will be coming out with micro sims at the end of May along with their iPad plans.

However, you can also go to any Rogers store, buy a normal sim card, set up a data plan and trim down the sim card to fit in the micro sim tray. The only difference between a standard sim card and micro sim is the amount of waste plastic around the chip.

Very interesting. Any guesses as to how badly Rogers is going to **** us on fees? I'm guessing it's not going to be pretty.

I spoke to Rogers today about it over the phone and at a local outlet on my way home. It looks like there is no avoiding the $35 activation fee for the sim card. After that there is only the plan fee, which appears to be $35/mnth for 500MB since they are treating iPads as laptops. The plan is tiered so that if you go over 500MB then it goes up to $40 and gives you up to 1GB.

However, that will all to change once the iPad officially launches in Canada. I think Rogers has actually done pretty good with iPhone rates ($30 for 6GB, $199 3G to 3GS upgrade fee). I believe they will match the AT&T rates: $15 for 250GB and $30 for maybe a couple gigs, with no sub required. But we will know for sure on May 10th.

What is your battery life while using MyWi? I would consider jailbreaking except that I only charge my iPhone once every 2 days. I don't want to change that to once every 5 hours. That is my only concern.

Rogers offers tethering for free. Why the need to jailbreak your iPhone?

Because it isn't possible to tether an iPhone to an iPad like you can a laptop. You have to jailbreak the iPhone to install MyWi, which turns the iPhone into a kind of wireless hotspot.

The battery life is garbage on my 3GS while using mywi. But then again my battery now sucks in general. But yes mywi does chew through your battery.
