...only in Japan.

http://mobileinjapan.com/2010/05/10/apple-and-softbank-keep-ipad-sim-locked-in-japan/

Softbank can eat a cock for this. Not only is it locked, but supposedly requires a 2 year contract!

  • No SIM Free iPads will be sold in Japan
  • 3G models will not be sold without a contract
  • Even using micro-SIM from another network will not work on SIM locked iPads
  • You can not make a contract for an imported iPad

With this situation, it definitely seems that Apple is going back on their word.

In fact, Softbank's main rival, DoMoCo had announced plans to offer microSIMs for the iPad, but Softbank's exclusive deal killed that...leaving iPad 3G users on one of the worst networks in Japan. It's not like the US where some areas are better for ATT and some Verizon. Over here, DoCoMo is just flat out several times better, EVERYWHERE.

Guess I'm happy with my import Wi-fi model, plus Mi-Fi adapter.

eBay totally failed in Japan. People here use Yahoo Auctions or Rakuten.

Even then you still don't have an option for a local microSIM without a contract. It looks like Apple won't support the use of non-Softbank microSIMs in this country either.

WOW, is it at least subsidized?

edit
wait im not sure if i understand the post, it says requires 2 year contract but 3g models will be sold without a contract?

Any regular sim will work (on an unlocked model). Just cut away the extra plastic.

Jailbreak? Then what? You still can't unlock a jailbroken iPad.

Japan's 3G iPad buyers are currently out-of-luck. They'll have to wait for an enterprising young person to figure out an unlock for their locked iPads.
