iPod 3G iPod freezes MBP clock

Title says it. Doesn't matter whether I connect with the FW cable via the ACD screen, or through one of my external drives or straight to the MBP, at some point after an hour or so, the main menu-bar clock will freeze and give me the beach ball when I go to it. Unplugging the iPod immediately unfreezes the clock.

Only a minor irritation but anyone any ideas please?
