I had this issue on my old 3G, but never figured out what the cause was.

I am now having the same exact issue on my new 3Gs. The issue seems to happen when I am at work, with the phone in my pocket. Randomly, my 3Gs fails to access any data over the 3G network. Safari gives "cannot connect, server timeout" and other applications fail to load any data.

To resolve this, I have to turn off 3G in my settings and re-enable 3G once EDGE appears. If that doesn't work, a reboot will fix this issue.

I reset my network settings, and that didn't help. Today I tried to reset my phone's settings, but kept my data intact. We'll see if that fixes it.

Has anyone had this issue and/or do you know the cause?

Yeah, this happens to me from time to time. I can't reproduce it, nor does there seem to be any pattern to it, so there is nothing I can report as a bug. It's at worst a mild annoyance. I will add that I've had this happen on other phones, too.

Yes, that happens to me also.
I got a 3G logo and can make and receive phone calls. Its just that data wont work. It keeps loading and nothing happens.
I do a hard reset by holding down power and home and once it boots up again 3G data works fine.
I dont know if its a software problem or if its an AT&T problem. Hope they fix it soon though. It gets annoying.

Yea, well this happened to me almost every time I checked my phone, for a few days straight. So for me, it's more than a "minor annoyance".

Last year when I had my 3G, I had this issue. I swapped phones at the Apple store and it never happened again.

I'm returning my phone later this month, but until then I'm curious to find a fix. I don't think anyone knows what the cause is though.

I am in England, and my 3G hasn't worked AT ALL for over 2 weeks. I have to use wifi for internet access at the moment.

It's dead annoying, has anybody else in England not had access for a while? I'm sure it can't be specific to my phone but I haven't seen any threads on here about major national problems?

I had the same problem here in Australia with Telstra's 3G network upto a week ago when it magically fixed itself.... Odd....

However a carrier update was available so that may have solved that issue.

I've been having this problem a couple times a day, seemingly since I updated to the latest firmware. It's not a hardware issue, since it does work sometimes and I can fix it by cycling power, or by the faster fix: quickly switching to airplane mode and then back.

I'm guessing there's a bug somewhere in a code running the 3g chipset (driver code, or the associated stack). Maybe a fix in the next firmware update.

Try a backup and restore in itunes. It fixed mine.

Don't feel like killing my game saves.....and unless you restore your phone to "new", you're going to have the same issue, as I had last year with my 3G when I "restored from backup".

I haven't had the issue since I reset ALL my settings to "like new", not just network settings. Hopefully that fixes it. I also cleared my browser cache.

I think this 3G freeze happens in specific areas. My phone has been fine for the past two days. I'll know for sure tomorrow when I go back to work. If it freezes again at work, it is most likely a network / software issue.

I work at a Disney which is one of the most dense places on Earth. Keep in mind, I get about 500kbit @ Disney...it's not a network slowdown issue. I'm not sure we'll ever figure this out. Apple is clueless on this issue and I'm sure ATT would blame it on the Apple hardware. Who knows....
