I've read through all the various threads already, and the detailed instructions on using pwnage but I'm still not clear, mostly because the instructions have a lot of graphics which make it harder to follow (for me at least). I seem to get the impression that you cannot unlock the 3G iPhone, although the instructions talk about re-doing the firmware again with a different option (on the are you a legit iPhone user section) to do just that (just not clear on this point). Is there a clearer readme file that has a bullet point list of steps to follow? Also if you can't unlock the iPhone 3G to use any SIM does anyone out there know if it is a feature that would be available anytime soon? Until then my new 3G iPhone stays in its box looking pretty. Any pointers or insights would be great.

Thanks
Barry

No unlock for 3G yet. Who knows when. Also if you can't figure out how to use it, perhaps you shouldn't be trying... but it's your phone and your money.

What a really useful answer, remind me to quote that to someone else with a similar question.

He is kind of right. You DO need to read up and understand before trying stuff like this on expensive kit.

However, there is NO unlock for 3g phones. A hardware dump of the bootloader has been successfully completed by TA, so thats a start.

You CAN now pwn phones on windows with Xpwn.

look at the excellent tutorial on iclarified.com

that's what I followed.. the only part different was UNCHECKING the box saying "Activate iPhone"..

I'm with an official carrier (O2), so iTunes activate the phone for me..

The tutorial is really easy to follow but if you're still unsure, then don't do it..

There is no unlock yet... I'm sure its being worked on.. just be patient!

This is remnant from the option to Unlock iPhone v1. Its a graphical way of asking whether you need to Unlock. You must be a legit 3G user, so you say, "yes."

I would say the Unlock typically requires one month from the date the hardware is released. They Dev Team is confident it will happen.

Thanks, I'm in no rush to jailbreak and can still use my 2G phone for now. Since I'm pretty familiar with pwnage etc after jailbreaking ipod touches and 2G iphones for friends and family I know what needs to be done so I've no issue with actually doing it. But obviously without the unlock function the whole process is rendered pretty useless on the 3G side. Here in Singapore the carrier will be SingTel, and I've had nothing but problems with them in the past so I dont want to switch carrier, nor should I be forced to either. That's a black mark against apple for the way in which they've marketed the phone in my book, but it's not going to change so I just have to live with it, wait and see. Like I said, there's no rush, but as yet I haven't seen much in the forum's about it so figured I'd ask and see what dropped out.

Thanks again.

So say I am in the process of The Pwnage tool and it asks me if I am Legit iPhone, and since I do have AT&T I click "YES". Now I have read reports that the Pwnage tool only jailbreaks the iPhone 3g and doesn't unlock it. So I basically don't have to worry about the unlocking of the phone? Also is it true that installer.app doesn't work for the 3g phone? Yet?
