Hi im from uk and have some ?S

1-In the US AT&T deal with ipad , if you buy the 3G/WIFI model can you take your AT&T sim from your cellphone (not a iphone) and place it in the ipad and get a 3G connection ? , just because im sure i read apple were using a special sim card that would only work for the ipad

2-Also my dad is planning to get one but with the 3G contract could it be setup in his name but the money would come of my direct debit.

3-Im looking to get a WIFI version and get my dad the 3G version , is the maximum ipads per customer 2 ?

4- Does anyone know if the UK will be the same as US and will only launch the WIFI at first or will both WIFI and 3G be launched at same time

5-Also does anyone know the rumored uk price plans

1. iPad uses microSIM cards so the ones found in ATT phones won't work. I have heard they can be cut down to size though.

2. IDK but probably.

3. Yes a limit of 2 but the 3G version isn't available right now.

4. IDK

Cheers hopefully i can pay the data plan via my debit card as my dad hasnt got one .

If anyone else has some answers fire away ;)

Yes, the iPad is now the largest user of the microSIM format. In the UK, you would need to use a carrier that even has microSIMs. There aren't many. In your case Orange is one who has them. They would just need to agree for you to use it in a data-only (non-phone) device. I don't know if that could be a potential problem.

You need to be careful about cutting SIM cards. There are a number of cards in existence which can't be cut without rendering the card inoperable. They have circuit traces out to the edge of the card to prevent cutting. You would need to do some Google searches to determine if your intended 3G carrier happens to use such a card.

I'm unclear if you're talking about using this in the UK. If so, whatever data provider you choose you would be bound by their contract. We can't comment on anything but AT&T. As for the AT&T plan, you can put the service on whatever card you want. It's pre-paid so there is no contract involved.

They were limiting it to two iPads but you could buy in both names.

Sorry, no idea at all.

Ahh so for the data plan do you basically buy the ipad from a apple store then do your own work to get the microsim from a provider . I assumed it was like the iphone launch in the UK where only 02 can sell iphones , just because i assumed you bought the ipad at the store and then bought the contract at the store.

What i was meaning was is the contract like a iphone contract where the provder (lets say 02 for example) take out like £35 every month out of your bank account setup like direct debit. So are you saying you just pay your contract in one go for the year and you dont need to go direct debit .
I was thinking he could setup the apple account in his name (when you register ipad) and maybe i could of just entered my info for billing info if it needs to be D/D

There is no contract requirement on the iPad. In the US it comes with an AT&T microSIM. There is no requirement to activate. At this time, in the US you can only buy from Best Buy (an electronics store & WiFi model only so far) and, of course, Apple.

No, here the AT&T plan is prepaid at 250 GB for $15 (or a month, whichever comes first) or an unlimited plan at $30 / month.

Things will be drastically different for you in the UK. You are probably not likely to get a deal like that. If it is a post-paid service then you would have to pay but I would think they would let you pay with whatever card you want. We are not restricted in any way as to what credit card is used here.

At this time the only microSIM providers are:

AT&T Mobility
T-Mobile
Orange
O2 (Telefónica)
NTT docomo
H3G

There is no ongoing 3G expense from Apple, just the iTunes fees. There you're going to have a problem. If you use a UK iTunes account, it has been reported here that you won't have access to iPad apps, the bookstore, etc. since it has not yet been released to the UK. Only US accounts have access at this time.

If you're speaking of the 3G then that is up to you and whatever company you get your data service from.

Ahh cool so basically you buy the ipad and then you setup the thing yourself with a provider . Just cause im sure i saw somebody set up there account straight away on the ipad so does that mean it comes built in with a microsim but you just need to activate it on the ipad to a provider who caters for microsims. I assumed it was like you have to be dedicated to a 12 month contract where the provider would take money out your account each month , but thats cool if you set it up then cancel it when you wont be need it as much then set it up again. So in terms of ipad data plan provider there is no exclusivity

We will be getting our ipads from the UK launch so hopefully everything is up for that

You saw someone setup iTunes on their pad. The 3g service isn't available yet but I'm betting it comes with a micro-sim bound to AT&T.

Ahh right must of been that , so the 3G versions will come with sim pre installed ?

I was thinking does it come with a 02 sim inside so you need to setup with 02 only if you want it , or does it come with no sim so you can venture around different network providers

The US models will let you activate AT&T service but it's on-demand. You can start and stop at will. No contracts.

At the iPad announcement it was stated that the iPad is unlocked. In the US it comes with an AT&T SIM. I have no idea what may comes with it in the UK or EU but you can just change SIMs.
