I had jailbroken my phone when 3.0 came out, recently I restored my phone and upgraded to 3.0.1 firmware. I was being lazy about jailbreaking it again and then 3.1 came out. I'm still on 3.0.1, am I still able to jailbreak it or should I just upgrade to 3.1 and wait for a jailbreak for that?
 
Depends on what you do with your phone. I don't think there is a JB for the 3GS for 3.1 as of yet.

Yes, same steps to jailbreak apply since you are not loading a new firmware, only jailbreaking the existing with redsn0w. :)

I love my jailbroken device so I'm staying with 3.0.1 on my 3GS.
 
Every instruct I see says to downgrade to 3.0. Are you saying we can jailbreak a 3.0.1 without doing that?

You cannot downgrade a 3GS to 3.0 because Apple has quit signing the 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW's.

iTunes will not allow you to select them.

You can use Redsn0w to JB a 3GS for 3.0 or 3.0.1

Go to iClarified and get a tutorial.
 
I did use the iClarified tutorial. 1) Cannot restore to 3.0.1
In Redsn0w app, it says "Unable to recognize specified IPSW". :eek:

because you need to download the 3.0 firmware..and load the 3.0 in redsn0w. it will work. i did it to mine. i have a 3gs 3.0.1 jb.
 
It is my understanding that the 3GS can indeed be downgraded to OS3.0 and re-jailbroken, if you have your ECID on file with Cydia. See this article on Saurik's page: http://www.saurik.com/id/12

The article gives instructions for downgrading from 3.1 to 3.0 on a 3GS iphone. Now, I don't believe that after you downgrade you can then update to 3.0.1.

As of yet, the jailbreak for 3.1 is not possible for 3GS iphones or the new ipod touch 3G. Check out greenpois0n.com for info about an upcoming 3.1 jailbreak.

if you are trying to JB 3.0.1 (which i think you are) when Redsn0w ask for the IPSW, select 3.0.

I don't know which iClarified tutorial you found, but this is the one you need:

Since you already have 3.0.1 loaded, you don't need to do so. I think the step you missed is the one where you point redsn0w to a 3.0 firmware instead of a 3.0.1. :)
 
I am running 3.0 already (jailbroken). I want to upgrade to 3.0.1 and Jailbreak.

I'm confused :) I would think I can just use the 3.0.1 file to restore to that and jailbreak but it won't let me. Seems I have to downgrade to 3.0 then go up to 3.0.1 but that makes no sense to me as I'm already on 3.0?

:| If anyone can tell me for sure if one can go from a JB'd 3.0 to 3.0.1 and JB - I'd really appreciate it.

You got confused. The OP already had 3.0.1 and wanted to JB his 3GS. You have 3.0 and want to upgrade to 3.0.1 and JB which you cannot do. You will have to stay on 3.0 until 3.1 is jailbroken for the 3GS. It's possible to do so, but there are extra steps involved that the 3G doesn't have to have done to it but that the 3GS needs done. Once that's all figured out, you'll be able to upgrade to 3.1 and jailbreak. Hope that clears it up. :)
 
Yipes! I can't JB 3.0.1 then. :eek: OK. Very weird. So why would the upcoming 3.1 work if 3.0.1 can't even be jailbroken if you're coming from a lower version?

I believe the tutorial tells you to select the 3.0 IPSW to JB under 3.0.1

Now I see someone already pointed that out.

You are jailbreaking the 3.0.1 firmware if your phone is already loaded with 3.0.1.

You are just extracting the needed parts from the 3.0 IPSW since 3.0 and 3.0.1 are identical except for MMS security fix.

If your phone is currently on 3.0 firmware, you will be JB 3.0 firmware.
 
OK, to clarify... the only way to JB on 3.0.1 is if the iPhone CAME with 3.0.1 out of the box.

I did both those things. So maybe I can do it then? Not sure how though.
Course if anyone thinks the 3gs 3.1 jailbreak is on the verge - I could hold off for that.

Yes, just get a tutorial from iClarified and follow it carefully so it works and you're not stuck and have to upgrade to 3.1 because of a mistake.

Make sure you get a 3GS for 3.0.1 JB tutorial and not the wrong one.

Then you are downgrade proof as I understand it. Not sure how much longer the 3.1 JB will be. That's the question of the month.

Yet I can't make it work and see no instruct as to how to upgrade to 3.0.1 that actually works. Or how to utilize the files I saved via Cydia.

Yet you can't make what work? If you are currently at 3.0.1, you can use redsn0w to jailbreak. If you are on 3.1, you can only downgrade to 3.0, not 3.0.1 as according to saurik's site, he only has signatures for 3.0, not 3.0.1. :)
