Ok. I didn't want to upgrade to 3.1 because of all the complaints i read. It seems many are pretty happy with the current 3.1.2

Is it safe to upgrade? I read you can't go back so I just wanted to get some feedback b4 i do update.

I have a 3GS, FW: 3.0.1 (7A400) AT&T 4.0

I've never cracked/jailbreak my iphone.

id personally say go for it... back ur stuff up on itunes before u do so, so u can restore and load it all back on if u end up not liking the new firmware (you know the drill) :)

good luck!

I took my 3gs to 3.1..runs great. 3.12 has some issues with stuff not working on it.

I was stuck on 3.0.1 because I was waiting for a jailbreak. I was happy with it. When the new pwnage tool came out I updated to 3.1.2 and tired to jailbreak it. Sadly it didnt work. I suggest you stay on 3.0.1 and jailbreak with redsn0w or if you have windows blackrain. I'm sure you'll love the JB life......esp the backgrounder app or smb settings

There are apps that i tried to download that required 3.1+ like RedLazer barcode scanner, but i can wait if needed. Tethering would very nice, but I can live w/o for now. I'm very happy wih my phone now, and I'd really hate it if things stop working as Gix1k mentioned. Maybe I'll wait a bit longer see what other updates are released to address issues some are still having.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my questions!

You did something wrong. As it Jailbreaks no problem.

Blackra1n also works on MACs now.

I backed up, then did the update. So far I've noticed my phone is somewhat sluggish and calls drop mote often, even with full bars speaking to someone on a landline. Gonna give it atother week, if there is no update ill go back to 3.0.1 (hopefully I can)

Anyone know if you can actually revert back to 3.0.1?

I read if you backup befor updating, you can restore your phone back to that version. I have not tried, gonna give it some time. I've never felt the need to jailbreak. I really like my iphone, but did notice my batt seems to drain faster too..

Oh well, still prefer this iphone over ANY phone I've ever owned!

I would just like to know if the major problems are fixed. I still have 3.01 because of all the horror stories I have heard about 3.1 anyone know if 3.1.2 is still being buggy, shutting the phone off, affecting apps, dropping calls and a whole slew of others????

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A400 Safari/528.16)

Nope, you cannot downgrade a 3gs to 3.0.x.

You should have stuck with 3.0. There's nothing special about 3.1

Just recently I've been having issues with dropped calls and push email. The only way I get email is if I open the app even though I checked to see if I still have push on and I do. My email very rarely pushes with 3.1.2. I also noticed over this past weekend I began to drop calls very often. I would have 5 bars of service and I would be on the phone for about a minute and I wouldn't hear anything anymore. A few seconds later I would drop the call. Very frusterating. First time I've have problems with my 3GS

I would definitely recommend upgrading to 3.1.2. I did the same as you. I stuck around on 3.0.1 for awhile until I got the all clear on 3.1.2. My battery life is CONSIDERABLY better, apps open and close smoother, etc. I'm satisfied with it. I am jailbroken and using blackrain to jailbreak was a breeze. Like a few other people have said, you will use tethering. If that's a deal breaker for you, then you have your answer. If not, I would do it.

One HUGE recommendation I would make though is to restore as new when you go to 3.1.2. Restoring from a previous backup always seems to create issues.

You actually can downgrade from 3.1.x to 3.0.x on a 3Gs. The only catch is that you had to be jailbroken while you were using 3.0.x. If so, here's the link.
