Hello,
I own an iPhone 3gs and am currently running 3.0 firmware. Just wondering about updating to 3.1? If I ever want to jailbreak, can I safely update my iPhone, to 3.1 through iTunes?

So far there is no JB for 3.1 and it is unclear when it will be available, so hold off.

Even though my 3gs isn't jailbroken, I should still wait? If you do upgrade to 3.1 you can't restore to 3.0 anymore?

No I didn't get my ECI iBEC #. Is that all I need and then I can update? Is there a tutorial on how to get those numbers? Is it safe to update to iTunes 9?

Do not upgrade until the Dev-Team comes out with tools designed to do so without ruining your chances for a future unlock. If you upgrade to 3.1, you will be unable to downgrade to 3.0, jailbreak (for now), and your baseband will be permanently locked to AT&T.

Definitely true. If you want to jailbreak, unlock or even tether, DO NOT upgrade a 3GS to 3.1.
