Work amazing with each other!! Just thought I'd let all 3GS owners know that! I've searched this forum, and there ain't much posts from 3GS owners. I was extremely skeptical about upgrading, but from my experience, iOS 5 is so much smoother on my 3GS than iOS4, no choppiness, no delays, the only pain I've experienced when restoring, is that the backup didn't remember my folders setup, so all my 80+ apps were scattered across 7 screens, had to reorganize all over again. So I'm officially waiting for iPhone 5! :D

How's the battery life? Some iPhone users (in general, not just 3GS) reported a loss in battery life but haven't seen any 3GS posts.

If anything, actually a bit better! I've done the upgrade at around 10am, after the upgrade and restore were done, I've disconnected the cord, and was using the battery since about 11am, it's 14:16, battery is at 68%, that's playing with it the entire time and using 3G a ton (for some reason majority of the apps that were restored were a version earlier, so a lot of them 30+ had to be updated, so that took about a hour to download and update - did all that over 3G on purpose to see how the battery can cope with it). So far so good! No complaints!

I've got a 3GS and IMO battery life is better.

I concur!

I concur!

That is good news then. I've been in Dubai for this week and hence haven't been able to update my 3GS yet. Good to know that this isn't 3G 4.0 vol 2 :D

Totally - I was really afraid that iOS 5 would turn my poor 3GS into a paperweight, same way that iOS 4 did with 3G, ended up being completely the opposite!

My 3GS was loads better with the new 5, however the poor thing is going to the great phone recycling company now the 4S landed in my hands yesterday.

I think it seems speedier, but my 3GS has had some quirks...

the Gmail account could not be accessed. Had to reset my password.

My character count in my text messages no longer functions. I always try to avoid sending texts that are only one or two characters trailing off the 160 character limit. Now I have no way of knowing!

3GS apps are gone

Any body know how to get my apps back? after upgrading I have lost almost all my apps and they are NOT in iTunes either. I paid $10.00 for an app just 2 days ago and it's gone after I upgraded to ios 5.

I concur again. My 3Gs took iOS5 like an athlete! Everything runs smoother, the screen transitions are snappier and battery life is improved :)
I think any glitches people are experiencing are across the board, not just on the 3Gs.

Here too. My 3Gs is running smoother than ever and seems faster too. Have only had iOS5 for a day or more so while I believe battery life is better, I'll know more later this week when I use it for a full day without charging.

My 3gs is noticeably slower. Crashing apps, frozen lock screens. It's pretty irritating.

No issues on mine thus far. All my apps seem to work fine.

Did you back it up to iTunes or iCloud before installing iOS 5?

One weird thing started happening with new songs that I add to my music library. Some of the songs are unplayable, see image below, the grey ones, I can't even click/tap on to play - any ideas? Re-syncing doesn't help...

I get frozen lock screens - slide to unlock and it freezes. Initial animations are jerky but then it settles down. takes ages to open text entry fields (like the search bar in maps etc) - have tried resetting (power+home) a couple of times, but no change :(

I posted about iOS 5 on 3GS: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1250760/

And yes, its fast and has a good battery life, i also had to reorganize apps, the way I could have avoided it was by not turning on the iphone while it was restoring (I mean using the new feature to use the phone while syncing, dont start doing that until everything is restored).

Had this same problem, just re sync it, with USB only. It worked after syncing it a day later.

Maybe they should merge the two threads... I'm sure there're a lot of 3GS owners skeptical about upgrading to iOS5. As far as syncing, it worked, I was using wifi, just now did it over USB and all songs are playable!! yey!! :D

I, too, created a thread for 3GS owners prior to reading this one. Maybe they should merge all three?

As I mentioned in my thread, I'm guessing there will be an influx of new 3GS owners since it's now free (w/ contract).

Before getting the 4S I updated my old 3GS to 5.0 and it ran better than it had in months, far better in fact. Battery life was still crap though.

My 3GS has been sluggish ever since upgrading. Button response is really laggy. I just quit every app and I still can't type this with out lag. All the features are great but if I can't USE the phone, it's not worth it.
