3GS BRICKED - still 3.1.2 - PLEASE HELP ME IF POSSIBLE

If possible, please shed some light:

I bought a 3GS 32GB 3.1.2 from a Craigslist ad. I tested it before I gave any money and it worked like a charm. It was obviously jailbroken because he had Streetfighter wallpaper and Cydia. Took it home, played with it a bit and decided I wanted to wipe it clean and start over, since it was filled with the text messages and movies and music of the guy who owned it. So I went to SETTINGS > GENERAL > RESET > ERASE ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS and I left it over night but it never recovered. It was on the startup Apple screen with the little revolving gear underneath (except the gear was not revolving anymore. It was frozen).

I can put it in UDF? mode and tried installing a modified ipsw file I created with PwnageTool but during the installation it quits and I get an error that says the following:

[The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600).]

I am unable to get beyond this error no matter what I do. Does anyone have a solution for this issue? I've done a Google search and seen it posted but NO SOLUTION!! Anyone know of any solution for this?

It is not bricked... Error 1600 (any 160x) is USB related. Just do the following in order if the previous doesn't work: change USB ports, use an external USB port (if possible), reboot your computer and finally use someone else's computer.

There is nothing to worry, your iPhone is fine. It just can't talk clearly with iTunes.

Next time you have a device which is working properly, before you decide to venture into unknown territiry and "muck" it up, either ask some important questions or do some research. :eek:
 
The problem is that you have completely erased your iPhone, including the OS. You will have to restore to an official firmware file. Hopefully the previous owner saved his ECID SHSH in Cydia so that you can restore to 3.1.2 using Saurik's solution. If he did not, then the only thing you can do is restore to 3.1.3 and hope for a future jailbreak and unlock. And next time before you push buttons whose function you are not entirely sure of, do a little research or ask some questions; we could have given you alternatives that would have preserved your jailbreak and unlock while returning your phone to factory conditions. But now it is too late.

"Including the OS"?? Serious? The option was "Erase All Content and Settings". I used that SAME EXACT feature to blast my iPod Touch out before giving it to my girlfriend and it absolutely did not erase the OS. It did exactly what the wording stated - removed the content and the settings I had. IT booted fine and worked stellar afterward. Wy should the phone be any different? I didn't think to ask any questions because I didn't think I needed to since I wiped my iPod Touch the same exact way with no issues.

So is it truly too late for my 3GS? My ONLY alternative is to bring it to 3.1.3 at this point, with zero option of jailbreak and unlock? Really???

Totally hope this is the case. I'm going to try it when I get home form work tonight. But, the one thing I have already tried is trying it on different computers, all to no avail. Hope maybe the external USB will work. Thanx!!

If you used this button on your iPod touch, you absolutely did have to restore the firmware when it was done. The Erase All Content and Settings function overwrites the entire NOR flash on most devices, and deletes the encryption key on the iPhone3GS and iPT3. In either case you cannot use the iPhone or iPod again without restoring it.

Lol no, the OS is there... don't spout talk if you don't know the errors. This 1600 error is USB. Period.

This however is true. Erase Everything basically leaves you a non-activated and in factory state iPhone; without the need to have to resort to a computer. The downside is that your iPhone will ask to use iTunes if the process is interrupted. The OS however, is still there.

The error given just means it can't talk with iTunes. The most simple way of fixing this is to use DFU mode.

Right. This is what I'm hoping. As I've stated, I'm able to get it into DFU mode and the phone mounts in iTUnes and I can install firmware... but, ya, I've been getting the 1600 error when I try to get the modified jailbreak firmware in. I'm gonna try the different USB ports as well as external USB hub and PRAY that one of those options works.

So, here's what I've tried:

1. I've tried both USB ports on the front of my MacPro.
2. Also tried the external USB hub connected to the back of my MacPro.
3. Also tried the USB port on my Apple Cinema Display which is directly connected to the back of my MacPro.
4. Also tried updating on my MacBook Pro (Unibody).
5. Also tried updating on my G4 tower.
6. Also booted my MacPro into Window 7 and tried updating over iTunes there.

All UNSUCCESSFUL. All gave me 1600 error.

Any other suggestions? ...hopefully??
 
The same damn thing happened to me.
Im tried blackra1n and Redsn0w... both fail to finish and do not let the phone jailbreak. I have a 32gb 3gs as well.
I am not sure how else to access the phone to get it to boot up.
Let me know if you figure anything out!:eek:

I will totally post something when I find the answer (if someone else doesn't post it first). This is how I'm spending my friday night. : (

If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), then create a folder called Device Support here: ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support If that directory already exists, then remove any files in it. Apparently there is more to it and it can be a b*tch sometimes to make iTunes talk right.

Also,

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO A STANDARD APPLE FIRMWARE *NOT CUSTOM FIRMWARE"

This error is down to itunes not liking your USB ports on your computer. Use a different USB slot or a different computer if possible. That is the easiest fix!

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO A CUSTOM FIRMWARE AFTER RESTORING FROM STANDARD APPLE FIRMWARE

IF you have pwned your phone once and then restored back to apple original firmware successfully and THEN tried to restore custom firmware you WILL get
an error in iTunes as the apple firmware "unpawned" your phone. You have to repwn it using iPwner and then you can restore using custom firmware.

IF YOU ARE RESTORING TO CUSTOM FIRMWARE AND YOUR PHONE IS STILL PWNED

See "if your restoring to apple firmware" above as it is the same issue.

Jav, he can't restore to 3.1.2 stock because he doesn't have his SHSH on file. He can't restore to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 custom because he can't get into recovery mode, only DFU. The only thing he can do in DFU mode without his SHSH is restore to 3.1.3 stock. And if he restores to 3.1.3 stock, he will not be able to pwn his phone, since 3.1.3 is not susceptible to the USB hack.

Ahhh the SH file. I forgot Apple now dealt with those. True, this would work back in 3G or 1st Gens but notthe 3GS

sorry there. 3.1.3 it is.

This means:

1. Do 3.1.3 and then sell it, or

2. Wait for 3.1.3 full jailbreak and unlock


?
