Hello forum,

Before you ask, yes.. I've searched google, this forums search function, an some other places.

Yes this is about the ring tones not working, NO my phone is not jail broken, nor do I want it to be. I don't care what the benefits are. It stays as is.

Now I've been to the apple forums, its full of soccer moms who think because they've read the manual they "know it all". I've never met one intelligent soul over there as of yet.

I come here seeking smarter people who "know wth their doing".

The phone is on iOS 5.0 not 5.x, that's what the phone an itunes says so thats what I have to put here.

I'm not on a mac, my windows is legal (much like all the other stuff I own), it is regularly updated (yes I checked "everything" including the usual codecs I own).

I could care less about the issue of paid ring tones, I have ONE ring tone an I had it made for me. Worked forever an ever until iOS 5 came out.

Can someone cut to the chase here? a sure fire way to get this to work?
I've tried changing it into one type an back into m4a then m4r an all around.

It's 6 seconds long, can't be trimmed anymore than that. So.. help? please?

I'm assuming you're using iTunes to transfer the ringtone to your phone?

If it's not working, what exactly is it doing? (i.e. not letting you select the ringtone, ringtone is selected but phone is using a different one, ringtone sounds messed up/distorted, etc.)

I assumed we would be on the page it doesn't show up on the phone what-so-ever. My bad.

I've looked for "ring tone only sync" options all over itunes an the phone.. none of which could I find.

I had issues when I upgraded to 5.0

What I did was make a folder on my desk top and copy all the ring tones to it. I then deleted all of them in iTunes. I synced my iPhone and when it was done I added the customer ring tones back to it and again synced my iPhone and they all showed up on my iPhone.

Hope it works for you.

I'm also guessing it was on your phone before the update.

When your phone is plugged into the computer, and iTunes is open, and the iPhone shows up on the left, click it. Then in the main window of iTunes there should be a tab for Ringtones. I assume the custom ringtone you mentioned is checked for syncing.

If that's not the issue, I've also noticed on my iPhone that ringtones (including custom) are broken out into different groups than they were before. It could have been moved or gotten lost in the shuffle.

The only thing failing in this thread is the OP. Ringtones in iOS5 are EXACTLY the same as they always have been. I made my own for my 3G on iOS3, and did exactly the same thing for my 3GS on iOS5.

If its M4r shouldn,t be any problem.
I too have Windows PC and a 3GS.
If its in your music library or wherever you have it stored on your PC what i always do and it always works is to drag & drop into iTunes Library and then i just drag & drop into my iPhone library which it automatically puts it into Ringtones(obviously) then check your phone and it will be there.I never bother with syncing as iTunes always messes everythingf up.
I always "Manually manage music & videos" because i have a large volume on my phone and i always uncheck syncing of ringtones therefore none of my music, ringtones etc won,t keep disappearing.
Hope this helps you.Good luck.

I don't know where people get off with this "op fails" crap.

Where on earth is anyone finding this "sync ring tones" option??
Didn't I just get thru saying that I cannot find any such option?

The ONLY option is to sync the WHOLE phone (Minus the music library).
An before someone goes "well thats your problem" no it's not. It was fine
before the stupid iOS5 update. Yes the ring tone was on the phone before
an during the update (I wasn't expecting this issue, so why would I take
any steps to remove it prior to the fact?).

Naturally the ring tone is checked under its own tab, unless there is a field
I'm somehow missing that acts as another "checker" which I doubt.

I continue to play with different "methods" claiming to work. Never does the
ring tone name show up with the rest of the default ring tones.

It used to be that a "custom" field would appear right above the defaults.
Now nothing but the defaults is there.

An whats with this "folders inside the phone" biz specifically for ring tones?
what folders? where?

I've already tried deleting the file inside itunes, removing it from the phone,
syncing the whole thing to make it "sync'd without it" then using various
modified versions of the file copying VIA drag & drop back into itunes,
then checking, still not there, tried to sync to make it "happen" an still not
there.

So.. without going into every tiny little stupid thing I've "tried" any further
how about some real answers? preferably from people who aren't demeaning
an rude like 12yr olds (HellDiverUK).

To those who have behaved like adults not trying to frustrate me to death
thanks but nothing so far.

PS: Yes manual mode is being used for the music, turning it off doesn't change a thing.

Check the attitude, bro. I've actually been trying to help.

Where on earth is anyone finding this "sync ring tones" option??

As I pointed out above, it's in iTunes, when you select your phone on the left. If it's not there, you should check to make sure you're running the current version of iTunes. And in any event, you seem to have found it:

Naturally the ring tone is checked under its own tab

Please clarify where you found this. Is it different from the location I mentioned above?

So.. without going into every tiny little stupid thing I've "tried" any further how about some real answers?

Since we're not sitting next to you and looking over your shoulder, the only way we can help you troubleshoot is to ask you these questions. And the natural pattern for troubleshooting is to start with the easiest and least invasive possibilities first. It's not meant as an insult to your intelligence, we're not trying to portray these things as "tiny little stupid things," that's just the way troubleshooting works.

@ Tomorrow - I wasn't directing my "attitude" at you, sorry if it seemed that way it wasn't intentional. You could say its the result of people like the one I previously named. So yea go blame him.

Meantime.. I've tried right clicking all over the place for this elusive "sync ring tones ONLY" option. Once more I cannot find it anywhere, not under preferences, not under any standard menu's. It's just not there.

The only thing that exists is "Sync" which applies to the WHOLE phone.

I disabled the library part for syncing music between the phone an itunes as it never seems to understand what I want it to do. Before someone tries to say that it relates to the ring tones, no it does NOT. The way I've been doing this worked before iOS5 an I never had a problem dragging & dropping it then manually; why should I now?

(It wouldn't have killed apple to go along with "cut copy paste" but instead they opted for this stupid sync crap).

iOS 5.0 & iTunes 10.5, You don't get any more up to date than that.

I cannot see a resolve here.

PS: Correction, no ring tone tab, mistakenly typed it wrong. Left side as part of drop down menu's.

It should be right at the top of the summary page in iTunes.

Summary - Info - Apps -Ringtones - Music - Movies and so on.

Sorry about that..
I corrected my above statement to reflect the only place I see a ringtone area.

Of which there is no sync option just for that. Right clicking it just says "open in new window".

=====

Much later that nite..

So after messing with stuff, eventually an actual ringtone tab appeared. Not sure HOW I got this
to happen.. it's gonna be awhile before I figure it out (Maybe I fooled myself? an I was right earlier?
an then it vanished an came back.. idfk..).

In the meantime, the ringtone given to me finally works (for now). I fully intend to make a thread to
give others my steps when I resolve this mystery.
