i am trying to jb a 3gs running 3.1.2/05.11.07 (simlocked, never jailbroken before) using custom firmware. i've downloaded iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore.ipsw, but whenever i try to restore it, i get 16xx errors from itunes (mostly 1604).
i get these errors in dfu or recovery mode, too.
ireb does not work.
what am i doing wrong? is blackra1n the only option for 3.1.2?

You need to use Blackra1n or already be jailbroken or use PwnageTool.

why do i need pwnagetool if i can just download the custom ipsw off the internet (e.g. from iphonefix.de)? isn't it the same? i haven't got a mac nearby.

You need to use pwnage if as you´ve never JB before... The first time it uploads a custom payload so that you can use pwned IPSW´s...

For a 3GS, you can only restore to a custom firmware if you're already jailbroken. As you're not, and you're on stock 3.1.2, you won't be able to restore to a custom firmware.

Instead, as mentioned above, blackra1n is your best bet, which should jailbreak your phone without having to restore to anything. This will run on Windows.

You can always try this

I had a hell of a time trying to JB a 3Gs with the custom firmware.

I restored to 3.1.2 then JB using Blackra1n and after that went back and restored/JB with the custom firmware without any 16XX errors.
