iPhone 3GS no service problems please help

Guys my mate tried using the red snow utility to update his jail broken iPhone 3GS from 4.2.3 to 5.1.1 he did this and always fine except he could get no service his device was locked to his carrier. He has now gone into iTunes and restored to 6.0.1 all works but still gets no service. What's he done wrong I thought iTunes would sort him can anyone help he is without a phone many thanks guys you know a lot more than I do

He dosnt no when he try's to dfu restore in iTunes he gets a Error 3194 i'm doing all this over the phone sorry lads

Be more specific othterwise we can't help.

You can look up the baseband in settings/general/info at the bottom modemversion

What and how is he trying to restore when the 3194 error occurs?

Does he have SHSH's for 5.1.1?

Sounds like an iPad bb issue.
