I do not believe there is a place to download a custom IPSW.

But you are 100% on the right track. There are many people spouting off incorrect information that you have to upgrade your baseband to 06.15 (iPad) in order to unlock 4.2.1. That is 100% incorrect if you have a baseband below 05.14, which you do.

So, please hold tight till Pwnage 4.1.3 for Windows is released. You are in a great spot with your current baseband.

I think I can cut in here a little...lol

I know there is a custom for 4.1 that we can D/L---Im not sure of the steps after I download the custom ipsw 4.1

DL to desktop 4.1--then whats next I know I have to do some stuff with Itunes then direct the upgraded software to my DL file on the Desktop--just not sure of the steps to do it--any help would be great,

I have 3GS with 5.13.04 (is this considered old bootrom)

#1 Create or find 4.1 custom firmware file.
#2 You must and only need to use Pwnagetool (Mac) or Redsnow (Windows) put the phone into a special DFU mode option.
#3 Through Itunes, restore with the custom firmware from #1.

And, 4.1 is untethered JB for all devices. You don't need to worry about old or new bootrom. With just info 3GS and 5.13 baseband, you can't tell if it's old or new. If you want to know, google for instructions on how to tell.

+1

I have yet to find a custom 4.2.1 ipsw for old bootrom 3GS made with the "unofficial" Pwnagetool bundle recently released by the dev team. But I too am looking for one.

I am in the same situation as yours (3.1.2, BB04.28 and yet it is currently unlocked and JB). The difference is I have a mac.

I read the latest post from Dev Team web page in entirety but just want to confirm my understanding. As of now (Dec 3), for 3GS, there is no method of upgrading from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1 while preserving the baseband such as 04.28 and maintaining the unlock status with either the aid of Mac or Windows?

Yes, there is. (As of now) Only if you have an old-bootrom 3GS, you can use the new Pwnage.

If you have an old bootrom 3GS (and a mac) you can use Pwnagetool and the "unofficial" bundle the dev team released to update to 4.2.1 to preserve your baseband and then jailbreak with redsn0w.

Theoretically you could do this with windows but you'll need to get the custom ipsw from a person with a Mac, which is what myself and the OP were looking for.

I agree with this! These are the steps:

1. Download the 4.2 bundle from Dev team blog under update #3.

2. You need to right click on pwnage tool and show contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles>Drop the bundle you downloaded in there
Open pwnage and proceed to make custom firmware.

3. Restore the phone thru iTunes using the custom 4.2.1 from Pwnage tool.

2. Jailbreak the phone using Redsn0w with the 4.2.1 IPSW(Not the custom one) but not
to select the ipad baseband.

Cheers

swoosh0217 and earthmonster,

Thanks for your advice. So as the baseband is preserved, unlocking after jailbreaking is not an issue, correct?

Mac users, if you have a a patched 3gs ipsw, do share it with us.

Crazy method but works like a charm. My old bootrom iPhone 3G S is on 4.2.1 jailbroken and still unlocked on 5.13.04.

Did you use the ipsw in post #3?

I trust the method works, but I don't have a Mac to cook my own firmware so I'm looking for a safe and reliable custom 4.2.1 ipsw.

I'm a mac user, I made my own ipsw. Sorry, I will not redistribute apple code by uploading it somewhere.

Apologies for the duplicate post. Mobile safari freaked out.

Understandable. Thanks for the confirmation that it works though.

Please help.
I used pwnage tool 4.1.3 to create custom 4.2.1 ipsw, and restored it through itune. It restarted my iphone 3gs baseband 5.12.1, and it sent me to emergency screen. I used ifunbox to passed the screen and there is no cydia installed. then I used redsnow to jailbreak it. Everything went fine, but I stuck on the apple logo screen the whole time. I tried to repeat these steps several times but there is not luck. Please help me

From what I gather that isn't the bootrom.

Go here:

http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/

Check when your iPhone was made, if it was before a certain date then you have the old bootrom... the change apparently happened in mid october.

If your phone was later than that then you either have to loose the jailbreak or live with it

[May be wrong, but I think im 99% right!]
