3GS on 3.1 - need your help please

I just got a 3gs in the mail. Since it's NEW I assume it's on 3.1

I want to jailbreak + unlock and use it on Tmobile. How do I do this?

How do I check if its 3.0 or 3.1?

Open Settings -> General -> About. Look on the right hand side and you should end up seeing either '3.0' or '3.1' :)
 
1- 3.1 just came out, so unless your phone is refurbed and they installed it, you will prob get 3.0.1.

2- If you do get a 3GS 3.1 then there is no jailbreaking it atm.

3- open up settings-general-about and it will show which you have.
 
i think you can downgrade to jailbreak, but if your baseband is updated (starts with 5) then you cant carrier unlock it atm, or quite possibly ever. Im almost positive you have the updated version which means its CAN NOT be carrier unlocked.

You can't downgrade or unlock.

Your baseband is too high so you'll have to wait for another unlock for 5.11.07

It's not possible to downgrade to 3.0 either because apple has stopped signing this firmware. The only way it would be possible is to have your ECID SHSH on file with cydia but since you don't have a jailbreak atm, there's really nothing you can do now except hang tight.

Correct, there's no way to downgrade a newly purchased 3.1 Device. If you could downgrade, the baseband would still not be downgradable and you therefore could not unlock. :) The only way firmware can be downgraded on a 3GS is to already have had 3.0 or 3.0.1 and cached your ECID on Saurik's server.

My friend has an iphone 3g with 3.1. and just wants to jailbreak, not unlock. It's not possible for him to downgrade if he doesn't have his ECID cached on Saurik's server correct?

Incorrect. :) Caching the ECID is for 3GS only. If your buddy wants to downgrade to 3.0.1 on an iPhone 3G, you can do so. You mentioned that they do not need to unlock so they should be fine just jailbreaking. :)
 
ahh thanks for clearing that up... since hes on windows and there is no pwnage tool. He can just download a custom 3.1 ipsw and just restore using that in itunes. Theres no need for him to downgrade first right?
 
I've a jb'ed 3G 3.0.

And my friend has a 3g as well, but he updated to 3.1. He's completely new to Jailbreaking. Can anyone link a good site for 3G 3.1 jailbreaking? Thanks!

Dont listen to him, just download blackra1n and it will jailbreak it under 30 secs and your done.

So in order for me to unlock my 3gs 3.1 Firmware 0.5.11.07

I do the following

1. run blackra1n
2. run blacksnow

3. insert sim and talk away?

Is that it?
