I own an iPhone 2G(iPhone classic) and have saved up enough money to buy a new iPhone.
Here's the question which iPhone should i buy?
Should i get a 3GS or should i wait for the 4G (I dont even know if it is really coming)

I'd get the 3gs. Even if they announce a new iphone next year at best it would just be a bit faster(more ram, faster cpu) and maybe have somekind of touch pulse screen so you know you pressed it. There wont be a 4g iphone anytime soon since there is no 4g network.

Im kind of in the same boat as the OP, my iPhone 3G contract runs out on the 7th December. I had a look at my upgrade options, but I have decided to wait until rumours start circulating about the new iPhone (hopefully) and then decide what to do around May time.

I'd expect there to be a pretty decent upgrade this time, especially since it will most likely coincide with the expiration of the 3g contracts.

Apple isn't going to want there to be any doubt in consumers mind about whether they should plunk down another $200-300 for a new phone or just keep the 3g for another year or so.

Hopefully this upgrade includes an improved camera (low light anyone?), redesigned body (including a matte finish), improved battery, 64gb option, 802.11n, and the traditional ram/processor upgrade.

3GS or 4G

I am also due to upgrade my 3G iphone but am opting to wait and few months before i decide. I would be happy if the next generation iphone has a flash on it and improved camera, say 5 mpix. Until then, im going to go onto the O2 Simplicity contract and save 15 a month towards my new one!:D

Depends on your level of patience. :) At this point, I'd wait another 7 months. Your original iPhone still works, right?

I also have a 2G. I bought a 3GS a few weeks ago and returned it after a week.

The 3G speeds are nice, as are things like the compass and GPS but I realised I really didn't need them. Or barely used them. And annoyingly enough when I did have one of those "I'll use my iPhone to look it up!" moments I never had 3G :( (when I did have 3G though it often seemed faster or equal to my home wifi)

The camera's ok as well, but still nothing compared to the 3.2MP camera phone I had back in 2007. Video recording is really quite nice for a phone. Not choppy at all, but cycorder also does perfectly passable videos for me in good light and bearable ones in low light.

As for the speed increase, it is there but I probably wouldn't have noticed it unless I'd looked for it. It's about a second, 2 max faster on opening all my apps. (but then again, on a daily basis I don't run any huge apps)

My real problem with it was that I thought once I'd used the thing for a few days I wouldn't be able to stand using my 2G, but they felt like exactly the same phone. Oh, and the battery life felt the same as on my 2 year old 2G - fab

I'm going to wait around until they at least change it a little now - bigger better screen, different casing, new OS, much better camera and battery

4G, you're in the middle of the 'new iPhone-cycle', so I would wait some longer. You hold it out so long, and I think you are going to regret it if you buy the 3Gs now when the 4G comes out.

I find it weak, how people are going to wait months for the next iphone. its only halfway through its life cycle. Your going to wait 6 more month to get the newest. Some people said back in September of 09, there going to wait for the new model. If your always waiting, you will never get to experience new tech.

another threads that comes every week/day

simple answer if you can no longer live with your phone and are unhappy get the 3GS if you can wait 6 months wait 6 months by then the new version should be out you can and either get the 3GS maybe a little cheaper or get the knew model. problem is nobody knows what or even if there will be a new model in 6 months history has shown this to be likely that and the fact Apple and technology continue to grow. truth is you are the best one to decide if you want to wait or not. I wouldn't go with a bunch of strangers to decide. ;)

Now I think he should wait because it's indeed in the middle of the cycle. If he upgrades in june/july, than he won't have this problem again.

Than the next year - or 2 years later - he can upgrade directly with the new version. In my eyes, that's better than wait because people are ALWAYS going to regret they didn't wait.

In my eyes it's like this:

Before december: upgrade to new version
In december: hard decision, wait or upgrade - I would wait (like it's now the case)
After december: wait

why you want to wait, get the 3gs,experience it,and if there is a new iphone next june/july(probebly yes),than just sell yours which will prolly sell for $300-500 and get the new one.:D

I just got a 3GS a month ago, (not had an iPhone before though) and its fantastic, my upgrade fell in november. But ill most probably sell this 3GS and get a 4G pre-pay and pop my current SIM in it) when it comes out next year though. Failing that, my next upgrade will fall neatly in the path of the 5G update (presumably) Phones have an average lifespan of 9 months for me, until i get bored and have a new gadget itch.

easyy dude.. it'll be awhile till 4g and 5g come up

just get the iphone 3gs once the 4th gen comes out after a month ppl will be like " im gonna wait for the next gen iphone" etc...

I qualify for an upgrade today but I'll be waiting until next summer. My 3G works great for me. I just wish I had the better camera and video.

Get the 3GS now. Sell the 3GS in May-June when the new one comes out. That's what I always do.

What the heck is a 4G? How do you even know that it's going to be called that?

People are just calling it a 4g as it'll be the 4th iteration of the iPhone - not a 4g network.

I have just sold my 2g (for £145) while it was still worth something. I was keen to pick up a simfree 3GS until my contract expires in March, but they're too expensive really.

So, in the interim, I managed to pick up a simfree N97 mini to tide me over until a new iPhone comes out that *hopefully* offers something a bit better (better camera is the main one, and maybe a slimmer body)

I am always amazed at this reaction. The operating speed difference between the 3G and 3GS is worth the upgrading even if there were no other differences. My wife has my old 3G and it drives me insane to use it after having gotten used to the 3GS. To be sure, the 3G operating speed was always the only gripe I had with the iPhone. When i click on messaging, I want to start typing immediately. the whole point of such a phone for me is productivity... if I am waiting every time I want to do something, I am unproductive.

Cant wait to see what the next phone has in store..

Very true. The speed difference is dramatic.

I'd still stick with your old iPhone until the new ones make it out. If you're already used to the speed of the slower iPhone, no big deal. It's when you get a new one and go back is when the older one is most irritating.

I owned a 3G before and couldn't wait for an upgrade to a 3GS. This is what I did - I bought a free-of-contract 3GS (in a high price) and am planning to buy the 4G next year with a discounted price (i.e., 199/299) when my contract is expired.
