I recently came into the hands of a 16gb 3gs iphone with 3.1.3
and its locked to o2.
Obviously it can not be jailbroken or Unlocked. so i thought

so i popped into a local shop that claims it can unlock the iphone to various UK networks.
the gentleman told me he can unlock the phone for £25!
i thought great! and asked if it is a guarentee?

he told me it was BUT apparently if you turn the iphone off, or it loses power for what ever reason then the Unlock will be reset and will no longer be open to all networks?

has anyone else heard this?

please advise me

He cannot jailbreak or unlock your phone, since it is a 3GS on 3.1.3. He is either mistaken or lying to you. What he describes is a tethered jailbreak, but a 3GS updated to 3.1.3 cannot have even that unless it can be downgraded (unlikely). And it cannot be unlocked even if it could be jailbroken. Avoid the scammers.

would you say its worth trying and not paying until ive checked the phone to see if it really has worked or not?

It's not possible at the moment.
Don't fall for scams like that. If noone in the world can do it right now that place won't either.
Maybe they think it's on 3.1.2 and is trying to sell u something that would
take 1 minute for u to do on your own.

This. All they will do is try to jailbreak your phone with blackra1n and unlock with blacksn0w. You can try that yourself, if you feel like it. You won't have any more success than that scammer would.

ah right that o2 seems sweet deals!
if by chance the iphone that was given to me, and locked by being reported lost ? is it still unlockable by o2 as surely the imei number would trace back to the original person?

If the phone has been reported lost then the IMEI will have been blacklisted and you will not be able to use it on any UK carrier anyway.

OK, now this has taken a sinister turn. Given to you by someone who knew it was stolen ?? If the phone is stolen, it should be returned to the owner.

The posters here don't generally help when there is a question of ownership ! (other than pcs are junk who seemed to delight in breaking every forum rule possible)

No hack or unlock service could do anything with a blacklisted phone.
If you bring it to 02 and try to unlock it they will tell you it has been reported stolen so they wont do it either.
Only thing you can do is use it on a carrier outside the UK.
