Hi,

I have a 16gig 3GS that was running 3.0 blackra1n'ed. Had been working fine for a long time until yesterday. I got an error message that the phone needed to be restored as it couldnt make or receive phone calls. Perfect timing also as I was out of town and using the GPS, that is a whole other story.

Got back home today and tried to pwn. Went through the whole process and when I tried to restore the custom .ipsw I got the 1600 error.

Came here and saw that new version of BlackRa1n was out. I am not overly concerned with unlocking so I figured I need my phone working so I will just restore/upgrade through itunes to 3.1.2. It wont even do that. I get stuck with unknown error 23.

I also tried downloading a virgin version of 3.0 - same thing error 23.

I have also tried all of the above in Recovery(icon screen) and DFU mode(black screen)

cliffs:
-blackra1ned 3gs gave restore message
-tried to pwn to new software 3.1.2 got 1600 error
-tried restore/upgrade with itunes - unknown 23 error
-tried restoring with virgin 3.0 (current version on phone) got 23 error
-not sure what to do.

Thanks for reading.

call apple and see if you can find out what error 23 is without giving your info

I once had this error 23 on my 3GS and it turned out the iPhone was bricked, yes bricked. I hooked it up to XCode and it told me error 23 was due to a radio failure. This is why you got the warning that it could not make calls.

You will notice that there is no WiFi, no 3G, no bluetooth. It's dead. Apple replaced mine when they couldn't even get it into DFU mode.
