Long story short, I obtained someone else's used 3G earlier this year. It's a touch worn, but works fine. I ended up liking it much more than I ever thought I would.

The phone replaced another AT&T phone, so they told me I am out of contract and eligible to upgrade later this month.

I was killing time out of town and made the mistake of testing my 3G against a 3GS at the store. The difference was night and day. The boot time, app time, responsiveness of the browser was significantly better.

Now every time I look at the 3G or wait for an app to load, I think about the shiny 3Gs that was a lot faster. Plus it has a lot more space (I always run up against the 8GB.) So now I'm thinking of upgrading.

It seems like the pros are a faster handset for the same amount of would have spent on a 3G if I hadn't gotten this one. The cons are that I'm locked into a new contract and will miss out upgrade pricing if a new version comes out next summer.

What are the thoughts out there?

Hold out for the 4th gen next June. Your going to be signing a new contract to find the next offering will be alot more of what you want.

You're going to get a lot of mixed reponses.

Personally, after you've seen the difference with the 3GS... 7 to 8 months is a long time to wait.

I would vote for upgrading, and if you are dying to upgrade again next year, sell the 3GS and with an early upgrade cost, it will probably not cost you too much out of pocket to do so.

How do you think I feel?

I have a 3G and I have to see my wife use her 3GS every day.

I'm holding out for 2010, though. We're both on the "every-other-year" upgrade cycle so we'll always have 1 of the newest phones in the house at all times, which is nice. (I borrow her phone when I need close-up photos of things, for example.)

That doesn't really help you, I guess, but my point is that I'm managing to wait. You can too!

Hey my advice, dont sweat it. You still have a great cell phone to use, and as long as you care for it, should last a while. Hey, I love my 3G, and unless the 4th Gen is something so crazy awesome, I'd still keep my 3G. I love it, its the perfect phone for me!

I do wish I got white now though

Great minds think COMPLETELY alike. I feel the exact same way you do brother. :p
