Ok, so here's the fine print:

I upgraded to 3.1.2 a month ago...used blackra1n to JB...no issues...

used the commcenter patch hack to SSH into the phone to re-enable native tethering

I JUST found out I have not gotten any emails SINCE the tethering re-enabling due to the new carrier config file not being compatible with ATT's voicemail system

i called them, walked me through tech support, tier 2 tech support asked if I had the 'profile' tab in my General/Settings page...I said yes, then deleted it, and 5 seconds later, I had 30 voicemails appear that had not reached my phone in over a month...so, i deleted the file...all is good now

SO...is there a way to re-enable tethering yet still have my voicemails reach my iPhone?

are voicemails considered the SAME as visual voicemails??

I just ask because I hear visual voicemail used a lot, but I am wondering if someone's VVM DOESNT work, do you still RECEIVE voicemails, but have to call your mobile number to check them?

OR, if your VVM isnt working, will your VM not work either?

hope that makes sense...hehe

thanks in advance for any help...!

Scott

The carrier file shouldn't disable visual voicemail by itself. I have installed the BenM carrier hack on my 3GS (unlocked with blacksn0w) and still get my visual voicemail fine. In case you didn't know, blacksn0w disables the signature check when installing .ipcc files so you can reenable tethering.

ok, so it shouldn't disable it, but SOMETHING happened somewhere along the line TO screw up my voicemail...can you or anyone else recommend an easy method to try again to re-enable tethering (what method did you use, thelatinist?), then i can try to call my voicemail from another phone to see if it works?

I used The General's instructions, installed fine, started tethering, then called my phone, and left a voicemail, and it was received...thanks a LOT for the prompt and informative help from both of you!

one last question...is there ANY way that this carrier file can change or be changed via ATT's network to STOP working at any time?

my MAIN concern is not receiving VMs for work, so I need to know that once this is done, and it works, can it ever stop working and revert to me not being able to receive VMs again? Or once it work, it always works this way, period?

AT&T can release an updated carrier file via iTunes, just like they did to enable visual voicemail. Any file that they send should not disable your voicemail, though.

Ok...ill keep any eye out for it, and remember to test my VM and tethering after the update is applied...

once again, thanks to both of you for your fast replies, and happy holidays...
