So, I've been trying to unlock this phone; of course, unsuccessfully. From what I understand there is no way to continue without bricking it, is that right? Has anyone found any clever way to get one of these to 5.13.04, or to unlock it some other way?

Yes, I've seen similar efforts. That is possible with the old bootrom. This iPhone has the new bootrom and with this particular model (week 8, 2012) the upgrade/downgrade trick won't work. I'm just hoping someone has figured out a different, workable hack for this dilemma.

nope, no method exists for you to get the baseband to 5.13.04

You'll have to have the carrier unlock that phone for you.

Yup, that's what I figured. Was an AT&T, but really it's Poland Orange, sigh.

If it was an AT&T phone, you could get it unlocked through AT&T.

I tried, but as the phone was never activated with AT&T they couldn't do it.
