iPod 3rd gen iPod stuck on apple logo screen

i just purchased this 3rd gen ipod.. and it is stuck on the apple logo screen.. i have tried resetting it and it wont restart... any help?

My old 2nd Gen Nano did that. When that happened I could not turned it off and when I plugged it into my computer it would not do anything. I had to let the battery run down and then plug it into the computer. It worked find after that.

thanks i tried that.. and nothing.. i always boots up to the apple screen then stays there..
i bought it knowing the battery was shot.so i bought a new one and im waiting for it to come.. that might be a reason.. but i thought it would boot when plugged in regardless of battery

also im noticing a high pitched whining noise... but i have to put my ears up against the back of the ipod... so does this mean i bought an ipod with shot battery and hard drive?
i thought ipods with dead hard drives can't boot at all thought?
any help?
