I'm pretty sure a process cannot be started without something starting it. Unless it was set to start on phone boot, which isn't possible without rooting a phone, as far as I can tell. Also, how hard is this?

Why don't they deserve the name Apps? Apps are just Applications that have a dumbed down name. They are applications.
ALL iPhone apps don't have a better UI than ALL Android Apps... That's just stupid. It's up to every developer to develop a good UI and it's totally possible in Android and there are some that look pretty dang good. I've seen several online
because I don't have an Android phone.
I'm not sure what you mean about them not having a "default separate video player". The iPhone doesn't. It's got an iPad app that does video and music. Also, how can you say the Galaxy S doesn't have a video player?
http://www.unwiredview.com/2010/03/...-s-the-worlds-first-divx-hd-certified-phones/ It plays DivX HD video... More than the iPhone can say. As for the Evo 4G...
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/03/23/sprint-htc-evo-4g-aka-supersonic-hdmi-out-hd-video-demo.html What the heck is that then? No video player? Ummm... It does more than just play video, it can HD video out through an HDMI port...
You shouldn't be so quick to judge devices that have more features than iPhones do.
Get some knowledge.
That said, the iPhone OS is DEFINITELY more polished. The Sense UI for Android comes close to being as slick, but not there yet.
