4.0 update

What i dont understand is pre ipad launch there is alot of negativity surrounding it like "bigger itouch / it cant multi-task" . With the 4.0 update allowing it to multitask why didnt they wait for the 4.0 update then display the ipad to the world ?

Also with the current issues surrounding wifi is there going to be a patch or even the actual 4.0 update coming out anytime soon.

Well, if that's what 4.0 brings, then i think the answer is . . . degree of mind blowing.

Giving us the iPad in the current OS/UI paradigm allows us to digest a monster, ponder it as such, but in a way we're all comfortable and familiar with. "It's just a big iPT - so easy to use!"

Giving us that, and an entirely new OS/UI paradigm, might've been 'too much' from El Jobso's POV.

I hope they release a patch soon to fix the wifi it's getting annoying. As far as 4.0 I don't think it will be released untill June/July along with the new iPhone.

Yeah i can see your point but alot of my friends were like ...what it cant even multitask , I just think it would of been a smarter move to have the 4.0 update on display .

Well, who knows the original plan. My take is the software wasn't ready to be shown firstly, and secondly, that you don't want to upstage a new product launch with trying to do too much @ once.

Actually, from a pure marketing perspective, Apple's set the table perfectly.

iPad launch and all of the hoopla around that, then it starts dying down, and now you have OS 4, and trust me, that'll be circling around for days and days... then you have the new iPhone launch.

It's beautiful, and its going to drive all of those who absolutely abhor Apple completely nuts.

Sometimes hardware launches cannot wait for software tweaks. As sold, the iPad is a very compelling product and meets the needs of thousands of users. The OS is stable and it does a few things very reliably and very well.

The hue and cry about lack of filesystem, wifi issues and missing capabilities might affect future sales, hence the decision to announce what will get fixed in 4.0 software. And that fix isn't coming 'till June. I'm happy with my iPad and glad I didn't have to wait until June. But I'm not perfectly happy and I'm hoping that at tomorrow's announcement a few omissions from the iPad get fixes even if we have to wait until June to enjoy them.

A lot of negativity? I think not. If there was a lot of negativity, iPad may have gone the way of the Palm Foleo. There is some negativity. Hopefully tomorrow's OS announcement will quiet down the negativity. The only way I'd be upset is if they announced tomorrow that I would have to pay to get OS 4.0 or that I couldn't get 4.0. Then I'd feel betrayed. Given that it's within the 14 day return window I don't expect Apple to make that mistake tomorrow.

1. There is no guarantee that iPhone 4.0 will bring third-party multi-tasking.
2. If it does, it probably won't be quite how people imagine it - I still see iPhone OS as a fundamentally one-app-at-a-time paradigm.
3. Whatever OS 4.0 brings, it probably won't be ready until July at the least. There is no reason for it to delay the iPad launch.
4. I expect there to be some UI tweaks to the OS but not a radical overhaul.

I bought an Android phone over the iPhone because of that and its embarrassing that Apple who is such a revolutionary company can make such a non revolutionary OS. My Android phone kills an iPhone in just about every category and the market gets bigger everyday. I really hope Apple is feeling the heat from the new competition and 4.0 is huge and vastly upgraded.

Maybe Apple didn't want to sell too many iPads. I have a couple potential reasons...

First, my joke about selling too many could be somewhat correct. Most of their products have issues with their first iterations. Maybe they didn't want so many people to buy them and post about issues rather they'd like to sell some now, work out the kinks for 4.0 and then push it even harder then. My guess is a whole slew of ads for iPad will be out then.

Second, this could be to thwart jailbreakers. Maybe they wanted to put it out using mostly an older OS to see if those in the dev community would bite and release some telling exploit just to have a jailbroken iPad within a week of release. This would give Apple the time to take it all in and make any changes to close up the exploits come the 4.0 launch.

My next guess is that Apple didn't originally intend to release the iPad this early. They may have wanted to hold on to it until the summer when 4.0 would come out and potentially a new phone. That could have blown some minds. It could be that they pushed up their release date to get a jump on the competition such as the JooJoo and HP Slate and the Dell Mini and the others that all were shown at CES. Apple likes to be the first. Because they kept the development of the iPad a secret and it's part of their business nature to do so, they had to release the product to show their cards. That way people didn't jump on the other slate devices before Apple had a chance to get to the table. Now people are going to see all these other slates as "iPad copies" when they were all announced and shown well before the iPad was. So for these reasons, I think it's possible that Apple was building 4.0 to work on both iPhone and iPad and then back ported iPad compatibility to 3.2 as a short-cut to release the product. This would mean that the full potential of the iPad won't be realized until 4.0 comes out.

My theory is that Apple wanted to see how big the "wow" factor was, sell as many iPads as they can on opening weekend, and then announce 4.0. This way, they sell all the iPads they want to the people who decided to get one from day one, and then by announcing 4.0 a few days later, they convince the people that are riding the fence to get one. It's all about timing and maximizing sales.

I did the same and realized Android is what I thought it was. Garbage, but better than Microsoft's garbage. Android is BEING killed by the iPhone because the multi-tasking feature is so hard to use. Android apps just turn on a background process whenever they want, without permission from the user. There's no way to force quit an app without doing a cold reboot. Not to mention, Android apps don't deserve the name "apps" as the iPhone does. Even the cheapest/worst designed iPhone app beats the best app on Android in terms of usability. iPhone apps have a better GUI.

Oh, and how can any Android phone, even the Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Evo 4G, kill the iPhone when there isn't even a default separate video player app? The iPhone plays and organizes multimedia while Android is lacking a video player from first boot.

Because they're only announcing 4.0 tomorrow. It likely won't come out until this summer, just like they did with 3.0.

So they're not going to hold the iPad release for that. LIkely they released it as soon as it was available for stock purposes.

ALL iPhone apps don't have a better UI than ALL Android Apps... That's just stupid. It's up to every developer to develop a good UI and it's totally possible in Android and there are some that look pretty dang good. I've seen several online because I don't have an Android phone.

Almost all Android apps never fully "exit" when you press the home key to exit the app. It just runs in the background and even if you navigate to Settings > Applications > example app > force close, it doesn't force close the app at all. Holding the home key to see which apps are currently running verifies that any app I force closed is still running.

My iPhone does not have a dedicated video player. I have to go to iPod > Videos. How is that any different?

Also, I've used my brothers and friends Android phones and I find that perfectly intuitive. If I'm in an application on my mac and I click on my desktop it doesn't shut down the Application. It's the same way on a Blackberry. You can go into most apps and exit them but the home button is not always a Close button... It just brings you to the Home screen as the name would suggest.
