Been gone for a while and was wondering if an upgrade is right for me.

My setup is in my signature. What would I need to run Movaje? I understand I would need a new video card but I dont know where to start. I use my machine to work not game so a basic video card is all I need. What can you guys recommend?

Also, i'm not sure if I can upgrade with my sdd setup. Can I run AFS with 2 ssd in raid 0 in a PCI card?

Thanks.

Did you upgraded your 4,1 firmware to 5,1?

If it's already on 5,1, for running Mojave you will first need to upgrade your firmware to MP51.0089.B00, you can do this running 10.13.6 full installer from the Mac App Store with a Mac EFI card installed.

Second, Mojave requires a Metal GPU, like Nvidia eVGA GTX 680 for Mac or AMD Sapphire 7950 Mac edition. You can buy a PC eVGA GTX 680 and flash it yourself, it's the easiest of all cards to flash, 5 minute job, and most cost effective way to get Mojave with full EFI support. Take a look on the Confirmed and Possible Flashable GTX 680 Models.

The advantage of going with Nvidia GTX 680 its the cost and the full EFI/boot screens/FileVault support, but you can buy a newer card like the Apple suggested ones, AMD RX 560 and RX 580 - but these card don't have EFI, so no firmware updates/bootscreens/FileVault2.

You can run Mojave on a RAID, but it's trickier and a lot more complicated than previous versions, take a look on this thread Mojave on RAID - a HOWTO.

Hi, I have flashed it to 5,1.

Thanks for the links, will take a look when I get back from lunch.

What about the AFS raid on the sonnet?

I've edited my previous answer, take a look. Mojave and RAID are a lot more complicated than before and I'd wait for the final version to try it.

Will definitely wait for final version. Not in a hurry just want to be prepared. Since Im still using Sierra.

Have you upgraded for NVMe boot support? If not, it's about the only thing missing from your hardware list.
While a PCIe SSD won't increase your boot time, it will increase about everything else. A 970 pro coupled with the Highpoint SSD7101-a can deliver 3400MB/s reads and 3250MB/s writes, speeding up many operations.

What about your video card, I didn't see it listed.

I wanted the Amfeltech but your foray into the NVMe/Highpoint SSD7101-a combination put the brakes on that for me.

1) Does the Highpoint SSD7101-a achieve full connection speed in Slot #2 without the use of pcietools?
2) How does it react to booting as far as boot delay, since it has a PCIe 3 switch instead of a Gen 2 switch?
3) Can I use this with my SSUBX facilitated by a connection adaptor until I can afford an 870 Pro blade?

I wouldn’t be opposed to running the Highpoint SSD7101-a with the cover off for the SSUBX until obtaining an 870.

Thoughts...

No boot delay in slot #2. Running the SSD7101a with the cover off is probably a no-go. The PCIe switch would burn up without a heatsink. For your SSUBX, SINTECH has a M.2 extension to Apple PCIe SSD adapter for $20 that should allow you to snake a PCIe 3.0 connection off of the SSD7101-a. (I need to try this)

Without PCI Tools, it maxes out at x16 2.5 gts. 3400 MB/s can be achieved from a single 970 Pro in a Mac from 2009 at 100% if it’s capable speed. 6200 MB/s with two 970 pros in raid 0 with PCI tools.

Okay, thanks... I already bought/have the Sintech adaptor. It raises the height from the PCB so I figured the heat sink wouldn’t fit over it. Perhaps there is a different adapter I’m not aware of. If you can test yours before you sell off the SSUBX let me know the results.

So, at x16 2.5 GT/s, what kind of transfer speeds are we talking on a single 970? I’ll probably sell off my SSUBX to get the 970, unless the SSUBX works at its full speed on the HP card (in which case, I’ll keep it for booting).

More benchmarks HERE. A 970 Pro 512 is faster than a SSUBX 512GB.

Do you have this NEW product? Ordering one today, it's about $23 with shipping to the US from China. I haven't seen any resellers with this product yet.

I purchased this Adapter..

I know the nvme is faster, but did you get those numbers without using pcietools? I'm guessing yes... How does it perform without running pcietools?

Sorry for maybe a daft question but what pcietools are you referring to? I know Apple has the "Expansion Slot Utility" for the 2006 for adjusting the PCIe lanes. But I wasn't aware of any utility that can modify the slot configuration for the 4,1 or 5,1. Can you explain? Thanks.

I don't know much about it, but I think it's actually setpci, and it's a command line tool. I'm not really familiar with either, so I may have misunderstood.

Check out this thread, and look at the post #30

The numbers I shared were without PCI Tools / setpci

The adapter you have is the same one I had from years ago. It definitely won't work, even on the Afeltec it blocked the adjacent slot.

Okay, great news on the OOTB numbers. I guess this is the card I’ll get. When that other adapter you ordered arrives, let me know if it works. I need a transition solution until I can afford the 970. Medical expenses are dragging me down to a tight budget with no end in sight.

I'll circle back on the new Sintech Adapter when it arrives in three to four weeks. Postal service from china can take a while. Sorry to hear about the expenses. Hopefully the new adapter can help you bridge to the 970pro.

Im using 2 ssd with a sonnet. My video card is what came with the system. Radeon 4870.
