4,1 to 5,1 firmware updaters - beware of 10.8.2 supplemental update!

Hi all,

Plugged in a W3680 in a 4,1 today. Had to do the firmware update, of course, and that brougt me to the netkas forums.

There was this thread: http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,852.msg16072.html#msg16072

It says: "IMPORTANT: If you have updated your 4.1 Mac Pro to a 5.1 using this utility, DO NOT install the Mac-OS 10.8.2 supplemental update. I just did and my machine refuses to boot."

Can anyone confirm this problem? I don't dare upgrading the OS at the moment.

UPDATE: A number of people (see below), including myself, have successfully installed the update without issue.

OS does not have the ability to affect pre-OS functions (i.e. POST) in any machine. I might be wrong. I have a flashed macpro4,1 and have no trouble booting with supplemental update installed. YMMV tho.
 
I made that post and was surprised to find this warning here. I'm still trying to recover my machine, but I will report on that on the other forum.

You're not wrong, but... Part of the update is an EFI and/or SMC update. Before I wrote the last part of my post on the other forum, I assumed this updater was written to EFI, so it could update itself at the next restart. Fortunately is was wrong.

But the presence of an EFI updater on any of your drives seems to alter the startup process. For example, you won't be able to select another startup disk anymore, until the updater has executed and removed itself.

I will keep you updated trough my original post.

There's no risk involved if you have a spare hard drive laying around: Just duplicate your current drive to the spare disk, remove the original and get your machine booting from the backup. Then do the update and you'll see if it still works. I would LOVE to know the results... I'd try myself, but I'm still restoring my machine.

Back then when the efi tool came out I didn't use the one from MacEFIRom. I made my own. That's maybe why I don't have such an issue with my machine.

Works fine on mine. What exactly is it supposed to break?
 
Been running 10.8.2 since beta on 4.1 to 5.1 flashed Pro with 3540 replaced by 3690. No issues whatsoever. Sounds like operator error. If anything, performance is improved, and with new Nvidia driver for the GTX 6XX, even more so. As always, back up first, but I did it, and would do so again without hesitation. If his issue was related to a GTX card, then yeah, don't update the OS until Nvidia updates the GPU driver.
