I have iOS 4.3.3 and when I connect my iPad it only shows me the update to 4.3.5 no iOS5 . Do I have to download 4.3.5 then download 5? that is a lot of download , or am I doing something wrong?
1st gen. iPad here

I think you might I never got behind in updates so I don't really know but you could always download the IPSW from the sticky above and dfu mode it. Then shift restore it on windows or mac option key If i'm not mistaken. Select the firmware and there it should be on there. If you somehow get stuck in DFU mode get tiny-umbrella to kick you out of it. Tiny-umbrella link http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/

I had the same situation yesterday. I was updating my wife's iPad 2, she hadn't done the last update before 5.0, a message popped up saying the same thing, i clicked cancel, synced it, and then clicked the Update button manually. This time the message popped up but with 5.0. I was able to skip the other version without any problem.

No you do not need to be running 4.3.5 to upgrade to iOS5.

when i first opened iTunes it told me an upgrade to 4.3.5 was available, but after going to Help --> Check for updates it picked up iOS5 instead

Haha, yea. It says on the iTunes screen when the next time it will check for an update is. This is Apple's method of staggering updates. Then it seems like everyone in this forum manually checks for updates the first day, the server gets slammed, and then they complain "Apple needs to stagger the updates more so they can handle it better" :)
