With the release of the 17" MBP the tech specs page for the MacBooks (http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/whatsinside.html) has been updated and claims a 4.5 hour battery life for the 15". Anyone get anywhere near this? I get 2.5 hours max.

4.5 hours battery on 15" MBP

Bluetooth off, Airport off, Screen quite dim and nothing in the optical drive I can get 4 hours (maybe 4 and a little bit) writing code and documents on the local drive.

i've read around that they've already revised the MBP a few times since its release. maybe with the MBP 17" release they've also revised the 15"-er so that it gets better battery life. it doesn't seem likely but i'm assuming Apple can't just claim whatever battery life that sounds good. there has to be some kind of reasoning behind it.

That being said apple has done stuff like this quite a few times before and have gotten nailed for it several times though out history. A big one that happen in the past that barefeet.com nailed them on was when they where claiming how much better the G5 iMacs where for gaming over the g4s. they also lost a law suit for false advising that dell and other PC manifactors hit them on. Apple tech spec on speed and things like that are just never trustworthy. They been nailed for lieing one to many times to be trusted.

It's common practice in the industry to advertise the battery time as the absolute maximum possible. That would be with all extras turned off or on minimum and without using the computer for anything except letting it stand there in a non-sleeping state.
We consumers just have to be aware of it. It wouldn't make sense for Apple to advertise inferior battery life when other laptop makers with the same battery life don't.

idk what you guys are talking about..apple does lie..and ofcourse battery life is under best conditions, they are a company wanting to make money...
my 12inch pb (latest one out) is supposed to get 5 hrs of battery time, with BT off, AP off, and dimness level to about 1-3 bars, i get anywhere from 4:40-5:10 hrs of use with microsoft word running, and maybe itunes or something..
i know the new mbp are supposed to have much better (brighter screens), so i'm sure if i can live with 3 bars... you guys can too! lol
most of the time i keep it halfway when on battery, but if i know i need to the comp for a good 4-5 hrs, than i try my best to preserve the battery..

apple has always lied about the battery life on every single laptop... i thought everyone knew that by now!

I'm not expecting 4.5 hours but I expect close. My girlfriend has the 12" PowerBook and it gets consistantly over 4 hours and the website for that model does claim 5 hours. Similarly, my sister has an iBook and she gets about 4/5th of the claimed battery life there. And those are both with the Airport on. So on previous models we were maybe seeing 4/5th of what Apple are claiming.
However, my 15" MBP gets about 2.5 hours average with Airport on. I have two batteries and they both give about that and in my office there are 3 other MacBooks and they are all getting 2.5 to 3 hours on normal use so this seems to be the norm.
I guess my main complaint here is that previously Apple quoted times that were reasonably close. Like they would say 5 hours and you'd go "I know I won't get 5 but I'll probably get 4". With the MBP though they are quoting 4.5 and you're lucky to get half that.
I don't think the 4.5 hours is all that far off for me. Just last night, I got just shy of 4 hours, and that was with the screen at whatever the default brightness is, and browsing the internet over wi-fi. My battery time extended about an extra .5 hour over what I'd seen before when my wife went to bed and turned off the light. (I didn't know the screen automatically dimmed in dim light. That's a really nice touch.) I'd imagine that I could get better than 4.5 hours if I dimmed the screen to that level all the time.

Ouch, yah you are right, that is not right at all..
i mean only thing you can do is maybe.. take it to an apple store, turn everything off, dimness to level 1, and if ur getting only 3.5hrs of batt life acording to the indicator, u may want to say, wtf, but in a nice way ofcourse..lol i would not be happy with that at all.. i mean i expect a good notebook, one such as the POWER lineup to at the very least have 4 hrs of use.. i guess if nothing else you just have to keep around a spare battery or maybe 2..
