Just want to quickly double check with you guys before I go ahead and buy some RAM. I have a 2.4 ghz 5,1 MBP model bought in late October (right after the unibodies came out) 2008. Anyways, both of these RAMs will work correct?

Also, what is the number after the "PC3" mean? ex: "PC3-8500". Can I get RAM that is "PC3 10600" or will only "PC3-8500" RAM work in my MBP?
 
Yes both will work, however you have more selection on newegg.com (also cheaper by $20).

The number after PC3 is the speed. You can use anything above 8500, but you will not see any differences.

So there will be a small difference, just not a noticeable one, or is there really not difference since the MBP's hardware is limited to 8500, but can handle everything above it it's just that it will in essence down sample it to 8500. Either way, I assume it is cheaper to get an 8500 vs a higher speed correct?

There will not be a difference. It's limited to 8500. It will downgrade the speed to 8500.

It is cheaper to get 8500.

It is important to note that you should choose cas latency 7 instead of 9. I am not sure which ones Apple uses, but since they are both priced similiar, it is best to go with 7.
