I was just at the best Apple Authorized Reseller store in Taipei, Taiwan, trying to quell the urge to spend my cash. I'm going nuts waiting for upgrades!

Anyway, I clicked the "About this Mac" on the demo 24 inch imac and get this: it had 4 gigs of ram in it! I asked the store guy what was up with that, and he said that it was something they were trying. The machine had every other option maxxed out as well.

I thought this wasn't possible.

I asked if I could get a mac made like that and they said no, not really, maybe I could order from Singapore...Weird!

Apparently this is not an actual apple store either. It has a cafe on the second floor and the third floor is off limits. I guess that's where they do weird things like put 4 gigs of ram in an imac.

I'm thinking about buying a refurb 20 inch imac NOW and selling it later if I really want a new 24 when the upgrades come out. Whatever they are. How much would it depreciate in 6 months to a year? A 20 might do me just fine for basic use, some light audio/video recording and editing, and maybe I can add another 20 inch monitor if I want more real estate. My ibook is dying and I don't want to spend any more cash on it.

I believe you would just do it to match make/model of ram. Just like how some people say you always use the same kind of sticks. (i.e. same 1gb sticks) Even though it can only access 3GB of it.

If the "about this mac" read 4GB, wouldn't that mean that the computer was recognizing all 4 and not just 3?

would it be possible in a future update that the OS could use 4 gigs of ram or is limited by the logic board?

No with the current chipset, only 32bits of memory is addressed.

wait till Santa Rosa. It is not a software issue.
